Summary

'Bolton is a gripping storyteller with fine, haunted characters.' (Peter James)

Just before dawn in the hills near the Scottish border, a man murders a young woman.

At the same time, a hot-air balloon crashes out of the sky. There's just one survivor. She's seen the killer's face - but he's also seen hers. And he won't rest until he's eliminated the only witness to his crime. Alone, scared, trusting no one, she's running to where she feels safe - but it could be the most dangerous place of all....

Crime thriller with Nuns

I'd never have dreamt of such a combination but that's why I am the reader and not the author. Ms Bolton has whipped up a wonderful combination here, from the balloon ride at the beginning, to the very surprising end.
You may think that you know what is going on, but you'll be wrong, unless you too have an extraordinarily vivid imagination.

Brilliant

I've been lucky enough to find some really good listens lately and this has to top the lot. Really fast moving action filled plot, interesting characters and great narration. More like this please.

Gripping

I've read quite a few Sharon Bolton books and enjoyed them all but I think this is her best one yet. Twists and turns, great characterisation. The narrator was brilliant too managing both male and female voices and accents with aplomb.

Twists and turns - never thought the gentle nature of a hot air balloon ride could change everything

I love Sharon Bolton's writing - her ability to tackle difficult subject while telling a compelling story fascinates me. This one gripped me from start to finish - usually I listen to audiobooks on my way to work but this one seeped into my weekend and evenings so you know you need to find out more.

Her clues are there but she still surprises you along the way, her planning is meticulous jumping between the present and the past to keep a pace for the reader.

Well worth a listen.

Full of surprises as usual!

I had no idea where this story was leading to but it kept me gripped all the way. Dealing with some real but hidden issues as usual and, as usual, a happy ending.

Very Gripping

I don't often write reviews but I felt I had to for this. It's quite remarkably written with brilliant plot twist. Extremely hard to stop listening.
Just one star off for the narrator: excellently done, but to my ear some of the accents were a bit "off". Not enough to put me off though.

Twisty Ride - a Really Good Listen

What did you love best about Dead Woman Walking?

It was very atmospheric. I could really picture the rain on the northern England moors. (And it rained a lot!).

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The story was a little slow to start, but good. By the middle, yes, I couldn't stop listening. I took my dog for extra walks just so I could listen a little more.

Which character – as performed by Julia Barrie – was your favorite?

Of course, the main character and her sister were my favourite. But I loved Mother Hildegarde (the head nun), as well as a couple of the other nuns who provided some gentle humour.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No really extreme reactions. A little sad at parts, mostly excited and holding my breath at other parts.

Any additional comments?

If you like suspenseful, twisty mysteries with an adventurous heroine and some bad guys, but no sex, you will probably like this moody, atmospheric tale.
