Publisher's Summary

Lizzy pulled the covers over her head. Then she realized what was being dragged behind the person with the torch. She rammed her fist into her mouth to stop herself from screaming.

For decades the Moore Asylum was home to the forgotten children of Brooklyn Bay. But ever since a scandal forced its closure, the abandoned building has cast an imposing shadow. Until now - when an elderly man is found dead, his body strapped to an ancient gurney.

Detective Lucy Harwin, still reeling from a previous case that ended in the devastating murder of a mother and her child, finds herself on the trail of a killer ruthlessly fixated on avenging the asylum's wrongs.

What disturbing secrets lie within the asylum's walls? Together with her partner, Detective Mattie Jackson, Lucy begins to unearth its terrible history and the horrors endured by the vulnerable children.

As the attacks escalate and a woman is murdered on her own doorstep, Lucy is forced into a terrifying game of cat and mouse with a twisted individual. But can Lucy stop a murderer with nothing left to lose?

An absolutely terrifying and gripping thriller that will chill fans of MJ Arlidge, Angela Marsons, and Rachel Abbott to the bone.

    "Fantastic Debut"
Would you listen to The Lost Children again? Why?

I wold not listen to it again, only because once i have read a book i have read it, so i know who the 'baddie' is!! i move straight on to the next book

What did you like best about this story?

i enjoyed how it kept flitting between the past and present and enjoyed the chemistry between the 2 main characters, i am hoping this develops further in the series

Which scene did you most enjoy?

none in particular it was an all round good read, it kept me interested all the way through

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes definitely could of easily sat and read this book in one sitting alas my schedule does not allow for this

    Any additional comments?

Fantastic debut by this authr, i look forward to reading more in the series and seeing the characters develop, hopefully the 2 main characters get together!!! Narration however was good, but a bit wishy washy, an injection of excitement in her narriation wouldnt go a miss.

"A good try but not a writer "

This book would be ok if it were aimed at teens but I’m sorry to say that a lot of it was put in that made you think that something would come to it n it was just a filler. There was a lot of the same reference eg lucky laughed or smiled or another person that got on my nerves eg as if a teen themselves had been writing it. Also the book was only part if it were for adults it would have more in-depth plot lines and side lines this was a straight forward story with nothing in between I was going to stop listening but I had nothing else to listen to and I wanted to see how or if it became more complex which itdidnt sorry but this was not a meaty thriller it was a story plain n simple

"A brilliant story line but.. "

A really brilliant story line, an old asylum- with children mistreated - that should be vitriolic in their anger! and revenge! Instead we have a mild mannered book with no thrills or chills. It had so much potential! But in truth bed time matter- better than counting sheep but only just. No recommendation from me.

I did persevere with this obvious plot. The narrator really didn’t suit the tale. Slow and deliberate style more suited to young children.

Good story but Allison Campbell's voice and her sounding like she was drunk through the whole book spoiled the overall experience

I read a review where the reviewer said that she\he knew who the killer was from the start, but I don't agree. I was surprised to find out who the killer was. Excellent read.

    "Great mystery!!!"

Really enjoyed the story. However the pause between chapters was just a little too long. Other than that it was a fabulous thriller!!!

    "Interesting, but not Gripping"

This was a pretty good book. I thought the narrator was a very good choice. She did the various voices quite well. My main problem with the story is that there were a few unresolved questions at the end. For instance, what was the point of Lucy's home being broken into? Was there a purpose to the romance of Lucy's boss, Tom? The explanation for the antipathy toward Lucy by a certain person was weak. I was expecting a better resolution of these issues at the end.

    "Wow! Great story!"
Where does The Lost Children rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's up in the top 10! This book was brilliant from start to finish! Fast paced, with many twists, a taut plot with tense, page turning, heart stopping thrills, this was an unputdownable, addictive read.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

This book is a really fast paced read. The Lost Children had me entertained and on edge. Following a similar formula to the police procedural genre, the novel opens and introduces Detective Lucy Harwin. Coming back from a leave, she is quick to jump in and prove herself.

Which character – as performed by Alison Campbell – was your favorite?

The narrative style of this one was unique, instead of a back and forth type of narration between the present and the past, Phifer would reveal a tidbit during the investigation in the present and then the novel would flash back to the time of the asylum and tell the story. This was so clever and really held my interest, especially since this didn’t happen every chapter. I thought this style might be difficult to follow in audio books but, this was great!! I'm snore sure of a favorite character... I really liked them all. The narrator did a fantastic job with this story!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did not laugh or cry... this isn't that type of book. It's more of a spine-chilling, creepy, gripping story that will make the hairs on your neck stand up on end... and I freaking loved it.

    Any additional comments?

This is a brilliant start to a new series. And I can't wait to read the next book.
