Summary

Unleashed magic. Secret pasts. Hidden worlds. Welcome to the Dark City.

My name's Morgan Rook, supernatural detective, undercover agent, odd jobs man. Call it whatever you like.

I take out the nightmares, demons, and werewolves. The things that lurk in the shadows around you. Guys like us call them Nightkind.

And here I was, set to quit this dark life and retire to sunnier climes, except for one final job. There's always one. This time a call to eliminate a cruel, rogue vampire, named Mr. Tudor. Simple, right?

Sure. Until the bodies started piling up in a new wave of vicious occult killings leading scarily close to my own front door, sparking a series of deadly events that would make my years of fighting the Nightkind look like a cakewalk.

Add high-octane chases across the city, a game of shadows, and undead assassins all topped off by a trip into the terrifying world between worlds - the last place you'd ever want to find yourself.

And the clues...they're all adding up to something...something big...and they're right in the palm of my hand.

The missing piece of the puzzle? How in the hell I fit into all of this....

Rook shows Dresden how to magic

I used to be an Urban Fantasy snob. I had only read a few other UF books, basically all of the Dresden Files, and a few other books. Then I fell into a host of other books and found interesting characters like Nate Temple, Roy Morgan, Sandman Slim, and Montague and Strong. Now, I can add Morgan Rook to that list!! He pretty much out Dresdens Dresden. An exteremely intreresting guy, I could read about him all day long.

The book is a an absolute whirlwind. There is a mystery, but the action really takes center stage, and we get to see punches, swords, guns, and magic all being employed to bring down whomever Mr. Rook is combating. The story sucks you in immediately, and you won't want to put it down. In fact, you won't even realize how far in you are until you are almost done. This is a character driven story, as much of the plot consists of go there and kill that (not saying that's bad, but it is the character of Rook that will keep you reading).

Compton is excellent as Rook, too. He enlivens the character, and I think in few books he will BE Morgan Rook in the same way that James Marsters is Harry Dresden. The man can undoubtedly tell a story, and his tension adds to the pell-mell pace. Just amazing work all around. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

I can see this being a long lived series that has a fan base that just grows and grows. It is fun, exciting, has a killer main character, and is packed full of so much action the words almost burn off the page.

If you love urban fantasy, great fight scenes, a magic weilding mofo of a detective, and superb villains then this is the book, and therefore, series for you. Get it now.

MIxed feelings

I want to say I liked, or even disliked, this book. The truth is, I don't know. I Iistened from start to finish but I did so because I loooooooved the narrator.

Shawn Compton is the audio equivalent of Brad Pitt. Everything about him just made me want to keep listening. So I did. It really didn't matter what he said.

Was this a good book? Probably. It dealt with, something. The organization? Vampires? I forget. But man, oh man, was the narration excellent.

Magic, Magical Detective, Vamps and More!

Dark City
The Order of Shadows, Book 1
By: Kit Hallows
Narrated by: Shawn Compton
This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary.
I thought this book was great. I loved the magic, the creatures, the action, suspense, characters, plot, and twists. It was never dull and I kept me interested. It kept me guessing and eager to figure things out. I definitely want to read or listen to the next book.
The narrator's voice was clear and kept the book flowing well. The emotions and moods were performed perfectly. Great job!

Morgan Rook is the MAN !

Any additional comments?

The main character, Morgan Rook, is a real bad a$$... a la Harry Dresden. The book starts out fast with big fight scenes and the action continues throughout the book. A really fun read. I think Morgan could have been developed a little earlier in the book... he is pulling out these awesome powers in fights but we don't have any reference for them so I felt a little lost early on. The author does develop him as the book goes on and after finishing I realized some of that delay was probably by design. The author wordsmiths very well. I really enjoyed the writing style. The narrator was pretty good. Not awesome, but not bad either.Overall I recommend the book if you like this type of urban fantasy genre.I received this title for free in exchange for an unbiased review.

Lots of action, weapons and supernatural creatures

The only improvement I recommend for Dark City is that it be longer! Morgan Rook, our supernatural detective, is himself still uncovering details of his parentage and early life in this first book, so I'm looking to future installments to provide more insight into Rook's character, taking us readers on a journey of discovery alongside his character. Lots of action, weaponry, and paranormal creatures kept me interested and curious about what strange thing would happen next. I'm sure the series will be great judging by how good this first book was!

Shawn Compton gives a fantastic narrative performance with plenty of energy and enthusiasm in each character he portrayed. Looking forward to the next book in the series!

I will get the killer.

This was a great urban fantasy. I love Morgan he was determined to get to the bottom of the murder of his friend, Tom and other like him. He has to battle evil and use dark magic himself to battle some of his foes. I look forward to the next book and to learning more about Morgan and where he came from. I received this book as a gift in exchange for an honest review.

You don't want to know what lurks in the dark...

This is my first book by Kit Hallows and I will definitely come for more...
This is one of those books that after reading the blurb you think you know what will happen and then discover that there are a few surprises on the way...:)

Well, it starts out quite schematically and predictably - a paranormal PI, Morgan Rook, has to rid the world of a foul rogue vampire while at the same time trying to find out the whereabouts of an evil witch who killed his beloved. But then a set of cruel murders happening all around the town changes everything and the job becomes much more personal for Morgan... And this is where the plot is getting more mysterious and twisted, with some quite unexpected plotlines... It's also where it starts posing a lot of questions and while we get answers to some of them, not all secrets are unraveled and the book leaves us with a serious cliffhanger - that's why I deducted 1 star from my rating (I really hate cliffhangers - I like my books to have a certain satisfying closure...)

The definite strength of the story is the main character - he reminded me a bit of those silent guys that Clint Eastwood so often portrayed in his movies; they act, not talk, and they keep their secrets to themselves... but you can rely on their persistence in achieving the goal they set for themselves... There is also a whole set of other interesting characters, some of them appearing for only a short time and still being quite memorable in their ambiguity (they will probably return in sequels to the book).

What I find to be a small weakness of the book is the uneven pace of the story; there were some parts that I wished had been a little shorter/quicker as they slowed down the plot too much for me. But overall it's a fast-paced book with a lot of action going on and some mysteries left for further development in future installments... I can honestly recommend it to the fans of the genre.

As for the narration by Shawn Compton, it's very good. The pace is right and there is no irritating overacting. The voices of the female characters are good enough not to strain your ears and the male voices are very well done, indeed (especially Morgan's and his boss's):) Generally, it's a very nice interpretation of the book.
