Summary

To most people, Maj. John Rexford is a retired marine living in the Catskill Mountains of New York on disability. Even John's girlfriend, Maggie, has no idea he's really a CIA spook recruited in Afghanistan and assigned to kill enemies on US soil. With exemplary skills in hand-to-hand combat and small-arms weaponry, John Rexford completes a string of successful kills, eliminating terrorists and their money supply in the New York metropolitan area. With the FBI hot on his trail for these illegal assassinations, John must find a way to stop an international team of explosives experts from destroying New York City's aqueducts, killing thousands with chlorine gas, and burning the five boroughs to the ground. During his mission John runs afoul of a high-level underworld assassin who uses his mastery of yoga to silently strangle his victims. When the assassin discovers John's one liability - his girlfriend, Maggie - John will have to make a terrible choice between her life and the capture of her abductor. This tightly scripted story begins with a terrorist plot and gradually turns into a clash between two professional killers, with the lives of both John Rexford and Maggie hanging in the balance. As the characters collide with deadly force on the streets of New York in Cut and Cover, the line between right and wrong blurs, long-standing loyalties are questioned, and no one is really sure, even if they succeed, what the final outcome will be.

Critic reviews

“A resounding character study just as much as it is an action novel, and both are equally triumphant.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Appalling

Narration very dull, even when the action isn't. Almost sounds like an AI voice (recorded words spliced together) but it's not.
Story is like something a teenage boy would write, it's childish and needlessly convoluted and macho in a way that's not entertaining or self-aware. Free but not worth what I didn't pay for it, iyswim.

Tuned out

Unfortunately, the awful, monotonous narration did not engage me in the story. Turned it off.

dreadful narration

The narration was so bad that I couldn't persevere without. it may have been a good book but I will never know. Doubt I will listen to anything else from this narrator.

a Good listen

A good storyline (probably 90%) which was marred by some glaring mispronunciation; this had the effect of my focusing, albeit temporarily, on these rather than the story itself.
Granted there is almost always an accent impact - what is a ballahclayver ?

turned out pretty good

I hated this book the first chapter or two, however, I am pleased I kept listening as it turned out to be an enjoyable experience.

Grating and invariable narration

Too many flights of Zen fancy. Plot sometimes confusing and not helped by a narration that makes it difficult to distinguish characters. In fact, the invariably loud, brash narration was actually painful for me to listen to. I don't really know how I persevered with it.

Terrible narrator

No idea about the story because the narration is terrible, maybe come back to it when desperate.

Boring and all over the place

Only reason this got two stars was because it was free. Monotone narration matched the lack of any action. I can’t even recommend anyone listen to this when it’s free. Truly terrible.

Enjoyable story

God past the initial resistance I had to the narrator and thoroughly enjoyed it.
