Summary

DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she's seen a girl die in her arms, and her daughter will never leave the hospital again. She's gotten tough on the criminals she believes did this to her. Too tough. And now she's been given one final warning: make it work with her new sergeant, DS Joseph Easter, or she's out.

Her partner, DS Joseph Easter, is the handsome, squeaky-clean new member of the team. But his nickname, Holy Joe, belies his former life as a soldier. He has an estranged daughter who blames him for everything that went wrong with their family.

Their adversary is a ruthless man who holds DI Galena responsible for his terrible disfigurement.

Awful Narration

Couldn't finish it due to the narration; some characters were fine, but others were so bad that they were a distraction to the plot. I tried twice to listen as I thought the storyline held promise, but sadly I failed.

Good story lousy narration

Very disappointed- having loved the Joy Ellis book narrated by Richard Armitage I got this (forgot to listen to the sample)
Irritating voice with terrible accents which is such a shame because the story is good

Narrator ruins this book

Honestly although a good story it's like the narrator is in a race rushing through the book awful narration

poor narrator

This was my first encounter with this author, I enjoyed the story line and found enough suspense to drag me back.
I did not like the narrator, the first part appeared rushed and the various accents confusing or spoken with a strange accent, will avoid this narrator in future as it distracted from the story.

Plodding

A very plodding and ponderous story. Pronunciation poor - Americanisms and poor British English. The 'accents' provided by the narrator were lukewarm at best.

Sorry - all a bit of a let down!

While I have loved all of Joy Ellis’s ‘Jackman’ series, sadly I really struggled to get through this, the first in the Nikki Galena series. I’m not sure if it was the reader (who I really did not enjoy) or the writing - but I certainly will not be listening to any more of them! Only the story line kept me hanging on, but even that was a bit ‘touch and go’ towards the end!

Brilliant story, let down by narrator

As with all Ellis 's books, this was a fantastic story, well written with sympathetic characters and good plot twists. My difficulty was only with the narrator, whose at times shrill female voices, dodgy regional accents and mispronounced words was a little distracting.

Dull and unpleasant

It s badly written, dull and the characters do not produce any sympathy because they are dummy like and unrealistic

The actress that reads has unpleasant arrogant voice and manner
I ll give it back

Fab

I was unsure if I was going to enjoy a new narrator after Richard Armitage ... but it has been a captivating story with twists and turns along the way for DI Nikki Galena .... look forward to hearing the next story

Absolutely Loved this book!

I was hooked from right at the beginning of this book. Narration was brilliant and brought each character to life. I wouldn't say it's the most fast paced detective story but I loved every minute and was captivated throughout. I will most certainly be reading (listening) to the next. Loved the authors style of writing. Very easy to follow and fantastically descriptive. A little heart warming too. Definitely recommend 😀
