Publisher's Summary

People smuggling, counterfeit currency, and attempted murder: It's all in a day's work for undercover cop Dan "Spider" Shepherd. But what starts as a run-of-the-mill investigation quickly turns into a matter of life and death when he uncovers a terrorist cell on a mission of death and destruction. With the clock ticking, Shepherd and his colleagues realise that to avoid catastrophe, they have to be even more merciless than the terrorists.

    "Just gets better"

Yet another great book by Stephen Leather, could not stop listening.
Why hasn't TV jumped on this to make a series about Spider and his adventures.
Still not convinced about Martin Read as a narrator although he's growing on me.

    "Great story, frustrations on performance"

Really enjoyed the story, what frustrated me though was the number of times I was distracted by the sound of the narrator moving sheets of paper.

In addition, given this book includes references to multiple security services, I would have expected SOCA to have been pronounced "soccer" rather than as S O C A each time the initialisation came up. Was very irritating to hear.

    "A bit predictable."

Story lacked edge and as with other Stephen Leather books, the ending was a bit of an anti climax. Would recommend you try The Stone Man instead.

it amazes me how such a great book can be ruined by the narrator! may be speak to Paul Thornley for some tips on how to do accents properly

    "I love this series, but..."
    Any additional comments?

The accents as portrayed by Mr Read are increasingly laughable, almost to the point of making these books unlistenable. He makes Americans sound like they're from Cornwall. I'm only a few minutes into the next in the series after this one, and I am laughing at the Iraqi's sounding like they're out of Trumpton. It would be better if this narrator didn't even attempt them, and just delivered his lines in his normal accent. Also by this point in the series is has become predictably formulaic, and you spend the first 20 mins wondering which character Dan Sharp is, but that is part of the fun I guess. Small dents in what is overall an excellent series.

Loved this book and the narrative was excellent. All the characters are brilliant and the story line is gripping. I am looking forward to the development of the relationship between the new and existing characters.

    "Torture - over the top"
    Any additional comments?

I do not usually review books, especially when I have not finished them. This is the third book I have listened to by Stephen Leather, both previous ones I have enjoyed. But I have to comment on this one even though I am only half way through. There is a secondary story line that has explicit torture scenes which I find gratuitous and too explicit. Its a pity because I enjoy listening to the exploits of Dan Shepherd - reader beware

Awesome story. I listened to this as an Audible book. It was fantastic. Now I'll have to read the rest of the series just to see what adventures Spider Shepherd gets up to.
