Publisher's Summary

A Wall Street Journal bestselling series.

After a period of brutal isolation in a CIA black-site prison, former Marine and gifted hacker Gibson Vaughn is free - but with no idea where he was or how much time he's lost. Struggling to maintain his grip on reality, he races to return to the life he left behind. Angry and disoriented, his thoughts turn to vengeance and the man responsible for his rendition. But Gibson's drive for retribution and the ghosts of his violent past plunge him back into a world he wants only to escape.

As old enemies and once-trusted allies resurface, the architects of a murderous conspiracy will beat a sinister path to Gibson's doorstep. In discovering the shocking truth about those he thought he knew best, only one thing is certain: those responsible must be made to answer...and pay.

    "Huge disappointment- Confusing "

The good news about being disappointed is that you reason to expect a different outcome. I loved The Short Drop and Poison Feather, books 1 and 2 in the Gibson Vaughan series. Cold Harbor is a sequel that cannot stand on its own. It is a confusing, rambling mess.

We find our hero, Gibson Vaughan in solitary confinement. He is delusional, holding lucid conversations with prominent, kind dead characters in his past novels. It took me going back to the last few chapters of Poison Feather to understand what was really transpiring. That should never happen in a sequel.

He not only estranged from his wife and daughter, (his love and dedication for them is his only reason for living), they are in hiding from him. There is never a clear reason why for this, or for subsequent changes in their relationships. What remains is severely damaged wimp of a man who used to be Gibson Vaughan.

"End of the Gibson Vaugahn series?"

I loved The Short Drop (Book 1 in the series), I actively disliked Poisonfeather which is Book 2, and I like Cold Harbor. This series is unlike and espionage series I have read or listened to. Unlike Poisonfeather, Cold Harbor ends without a cliffhanger. I suspect that there will be more novels in the series.

Author Matthew FitzSimmons' characters are interesting. The bad guys are very bad and the good guys including the protagonist are deeply flawed and capable of bad behavior. The plot is interesting and not very realistic, but Cold Harbor kept my interest throughout. There is a great plot twist near the end of the novel. Narration is outstanding.

    "some experiments fail"

This was by far the least coherent entry in the series. A bit overwritten from the opening pages, a bit scattered thereafter, and with the annoying two new plot elements that were unconvincing and annoyiing after a short while, though they persisted. The storyline coalesced eventually and came to a good conclusion . . . not a bad book, and props for the experimentation, but I'd recommend going back to a slightly less cosmic approach.

"not as good as book 2"

I was excited at opportunity to read book 3 but didn't like any of the plot. Didn't seem to have as much thought out into the plot as book 2.

    "Mixed Bag, Mixed Series"

This book in the series, rambles a bit. A main plot line starts, and then we get off on a couple other branches of plots. Seems like the author started, then figured that main plot line could not carry the book. Then came up with a couple other plots that just kind of materialized.

Overall, I like Gibson Vaughn. The first in the series, was one of the best books I have read in a while. Poison Feather was OK, but didn't end very well. I was hoping this would build upon that cliffhanger, but really didn't. Also, his 2 talking ghosts kind of wore out their welcome.

Hope there are more in their series, but needs to get back to something more believable.

    "Masterful "

Gibson is the man. I waited anxiously for the next chapter in Gibson’s saga. At poison feather’s end we found Gibson snatched drugged on his way to a CIA black-site. I truly was anxious for Gibson. I’m glad my wait was reasonable. I hope this is not the end of Gibson as Ellie is still in his rear view.
The story unfolds with intrigue and suspense. Old charters reappear and lend themselves to the story in true loyal brotherhood. The ending is satisfactory if it dose prove to be the end. Hope not.
You can’t go wrong with this book!

"Great Gibson Vaughn Story—Very Angry But Redeemed"

Another great thriller. Gibson Vaughn just gets into more and more trouble but in this one he gets out of the trouble and redeems himself. He is released from a CIA black ops prison after 18 months. He finds out his ex-wife and daughter have disappeared; his friends are gone, and he is totally alone except for the ghost of his father and the daughter of the Senator he was looking for in an earlier book. All stand alone but you will be glad you started with the first book. It sets the stage. I listened in audible and the narrator is superb. James Patrick Cronin is Vaughn.

    " Suspense without Resolution"

Since book 2 ended without resolving major questions and conflicts, I hoped that book 3 would adress them and provide resolution. Instead, a new story developed and the ending was again unresolved and unsatisfactory. Very disappointing.
