Publisher's Summary

The year is 1931. The new and luxurious transatlantic liner Empress of Britain is on her eastward passage. Among the first-class passengers on board are two English confidence tricksters, making a discreet exit from a little awkwardness they have left behind them in the United States. A chance meeting on deck brings them a tempting new target in the shape of Miss Charnwood and her niece, the beautiful Diana, only child of the immensely wealthy Fabian Charnwood.

    "one of his best!"
What did you like most about Closed Circle?

first discovered goddard in the early 90's, and went on to read everything i could find of his. missed this one, and extremely glad that i found it.

Have you listened to any of Bill Wallis’s other performances? How does this one compare?

no, but i will definitely look for more of his work.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    yes - but too long!

    "Well written"

This was an excellent tale of murder, mayhem and trickery and did keep my interest as the characters were so well developed and the plot skillfully executed. BUT ..... I wasn't very comfortable with the characters and their doubtful morals.

I am glad I read it though, but it is not Mr Goddard's finest in my opinion, not because of the writing or the plot but just because I felt bad about the main characters.

    "No Redemption."

Well written and well plotted, most of the characters in this book have little conscience or redeeming qualities.. Perhaps, I've met too many like-minded individuals in my professional career, as those in this novel, and as such, I found them as distasteful as characters in a book as clients in a legal field, and I am not be able to recommend the book as entertaining, unless of course, one tends to enjoy saying, "Oh, there you are again, I thought I was done with you and your ilk."

"Goddard does it again. And again."

Though not my favorite Goddard book, it is still a 5 star in my eyes. A plot that is never boring with great characters to make the story never stall out. Excellent narration to boot!! Wish there were more Goddards in the literary world.

"Love Goddard but hated this book"

I've enjoyed all the Goddard books I've read until this one. I found the writing to be a bit overwrought, the characters wholly unlikable and self indulgent, and the plot contrived. The dialogue is extraordinarily trite throughout and the excessive touristic scene painting of Venice tedious. The love scenes are laugh out loud hilarious. It surprised me in the most unpleasant way to find Goddard had written this book. In fact, I wondered several times if he had "farmed this one out." If you're new to reading his novels, try another. Bill Wallis is a wonderful narrator capable of epitomizing a vast range of characters, though his pronunciation can occasionally be eccentric.
