Summary

Thirty seconds after the jury announced its verdict, I decided to kill my client.

Second-string linebacker turned trial lawyer Jake Lassiter squares off against his toughest, most unpredictable adversary yet: himself.

The downward spiral begins when Jake's client, Miami Dolphins' running back Thunder Thurston, is cleared of murdering his wife. Jake didn't expect to win, didn't want to win, since he is sure his client is guilty. When Thurston walks free, Lassiter vows to seek his own kind of justice. Street justice. Vigilante justice.

Law partners Steve Solomon and Victoria Lord can't believe their friend has become so deeply, inexplicably obsessed with killing Thurston. Convinced Jake's unhinged behavior is due to concussive brain injuries suffered during his pro football career, they beg him to seek treatment. But as Lassiter's raging fixation on vengeance grows, Solomon and Lord wonder if they're too late to help. Is it game over for Jake's career...and his life?

Bum Book

I have been an avid reader of Paul Levine's character (Jake Lassiter). Lassiter has been a fun, engaging and quirky lawyer who battled his way through strange cases and stranger girl friends. Right or wrong, he battled valiantly for his clients. Unfortunately, in Bum Luck, the author turned Jake into a cold blooded murderer with no remorse who totally sabotaged his own client. It has turned me off of Lassiter and the author. Goodbye to both.

Almost ruined by a couple of dumb themes

OK, I was willing to overlook the tired and cliché pro athlete character, and this had the makings of a truly great book. But it started going south with the theme of the lawyer fighting against his insurance company client, and the "pre-death obituary" scene. Both were just plain stupid!

Bummer! No More to listen to!

This is a great series. The crimes seem doable. Sometimes the pit comes not so much. All in all very entertaining.

I vote 5 stars

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

When you listen to one that is well written and where the main character acts differently that in most books involving an attorney it has to be good. Then add the narrator Luke Daniels and you have a hit. I tried to get Luke to do my book adjuster Stories and it did not work out. I enjoy his work.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters you found at the books beginning were mostly all different as the book concluded. I hope there is a second book in what hopefully is a series.

Which scene was your favorite?

When main character was told he was under investigation for something he was not involved in.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It took me three days to listen but hey you have to have the time to do it all at once.

Any additional comments?

Please, Please do a second book.

Wow SER

Great characters. Laughed out loud. Didn't see the ending. Had a clear picture in my mind's eye of the action. Might listen a second time as the narrator acted the story.

Light and fun legal thriller

I have previously reviewed two other novels in this series. This just released Book 12 in Paul Levine's Jake Lassiter series is a lot like other books in the series; that is, it is a lot more about Jake Lassiter the person than about Jake Lassiter the lawyer. In this novel Jake is a 50 year old never married ex-college and ex-pro mediocre football player who left the game to go to law school. He is now very worried about the impact on his brain of his many concussions while playing football. Jake is strongly ethical as he defines ethics, but as a lawyer he skirts legal rules to do what is "right". The setting is Miami FL.

If the listener is interested in serious legal thrillers, Paul Levine's light and fun novels that I have read or listened to do not fill the bill. Narrator Luke Daniels strikes exactly the correct tone in narrating the this novel.

I will continue to listen to other audio novels in this series (3 more are currently in my Audible library).
