Publisher's Summary

One of the greatest achievements in human history.

A secret that was never supposed to be found.

And a crisis that cannot be stopped.

Deep in the Caribbean Sea, a nuclear submarine is forced to suddenly abort its mission under mysterious circumstances. Strange facts begin to emerge that lead naval investigator, John Clay, to a small group of marine biologists who are quietly on the verge of making history.

With the help of a powerful computer system, Alison Shaw and her team are preparing to translate the first two-way conversation with the planet's second smartest species. But the team discovers much more from their dolphins than they ever expected when a secret object is revealed on the ocean floor. One that was never supposed to be found.

Alison was sure she would never trust the military again. However, when an unknown group immediately becomes interested in her work, Alison realizes John Clay may be the only person she can trust. Together they must piece together a dangerous puzzle, and the most frightening piece, is the trembling in Antarctica.

To make matters worse, someone from the inside is trying to stop them. Now time is running out...and our understanding of the world is about to change forever.

    Story
"Thoroughly enjoyed this book, and now bought Leap"
If you could sum up Breakthrough in three words, what would they be?

Good old fashioned adventure story, very much in the ilk of Clive Cussler I thought. There will be those who will not agree, but I listen to a very eclectic selection of books, and sometimes I just want to wallow in some good old mind candy, and this fits the bill. Narration by Scott Brick is as excellent as always. A romping yarn that passed very quickly. Loved it.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I suppose Sally and Dirk -

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I listened in one sitting, so cannot really pick out one part

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    I did - straight through

    Any additional comments?

As I said before, I enjoy a fantasy adventure to just relax and wallow in it. I honestly thought it was a Cussler novel at times.

    Story
    "A fantastic sci-fi adventure novel"

How am I just now hearing about Michael C. Grumley? This guy writes old school adventure sci-fi like a boss! Reading Breakthrough made me reminiscent for other favorites like The Swarm, Beast, and Jurassic Park, to name a few.

Does all the science add up? Pish posh, of course not, but who cares? It works. Does it make for a great story, where you cheer on the heroes, cry for the innocents, and hold your breath when something goes boom? Yes, yes, yes!

On my TBR short list there are a few novels waiting, including some from some potentially wonderful indie authors, but darn it all, they'll have to wait. I have Book 2 (Leap) and Book 3 (Catalyst) here in my library, and I...can't...help...myself. It's like an addiction.

I have this overwhelming urge to go watch "The Poseidon Adventure" now. And maybe "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", if I can dig up that ancient old series anywhere. I want to revisit my old adventure sci-fi roots. Where can I find old episodes of "Flipper"?

    "AMAZING!!!"

I listened to this book and couldn't stop. Every single break at work, every moment in the gym, every ride in the car this book was playing. The writing was phenomenal and the mind blowing plot had me hooked. I CAN'T WAIT to read LEAP and the rest of the series. I do wonder how much of this was science and how much was pure fiction. Either way I was thoroughly entertained and intrigued.

"Grumley could be the new Crichton!!!!!"
    Any additional comments?

This was so good, I really enjoyed this book. If you're looking for a fun and fast paced sci fi that is reminiscent of Michael Crichton's SPHERE then this is the book for you.
In this book a couple of researchers have developed a computer program that has decoded the sounds of dolphins and can translate them to speech. In steps the Navy wanting to use the dolphins and give them instructions to find lost equipment on the bottom of the ocean. The dolphins find it but they also find something else-some kind of portal. It's either a gateway or a source of energy but it is not of this world or so it seems. There is also a city with 1,200 beings living there. Are they people ? humans? friendly? Or not? Should the Navy shoot first and ask questions later?

Scott Brick is as always a fantastic narrator!

    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

"More than a little far fetched;.a good page turn "

The story is more than little far fetched....but a good page turning thriller! Narrator Scott Brick is the BEST; as usual, affording the story to sound grounded even though the story line prose was fantastical. One would classify this book as a thriller and an easy read. Personally, I haven't decided whether to download the next book in the series. I usually prefer to separate present day drama from all out Science Fiction....I find that books that don't take on a Fantasy aspect that I don't enjoy.

This book is well worth a credit. Scott Brick is amazing as usual and the story is pretty cool. Being a software developer I was happy the technology discussions didn't insult me. Dolphins are amazing animals and I don't think we yet understand how intelligent they are. It's been proven dolphins call each other by unique sounds/names how much further advanced are they? Well that's the fun part of the story!

    "Breakthrough"

I would categorize this book as Science Fiction/Fantasy. Some of the story, especially that where they are developing one on one communication with the dolphins was very enjoyable. Other places where they morphed into more intelligent species and such left me a little nonplussed. Simply because the narrative indicated that they had made up their minds on the subject. But in my mind this book is categorized as Science Fiction/Fantasy. I would definitely rate it as a four star read.

    "Fantastic new read!"

Great story, new and different plot, excellent writing, really enjoyed it! I read and listen to a LOT of books, especially sci-fi/fantasy; they can begin to all have the same basic format. This one is very different, very plausible concepts and also presents moral dilemmas that should be considered by all. It's definitely worth a read!

Michael has managed to create a story with all of the above elements in a way that pulls you into this world, waiting to see what happens next.
