Summary

A loving husband. The perfect killer?

'I wonder if Mia thinks I have a dark side. Most likely as far as she knows, I am just her dear loving husband.'

Paul Strom has spent years building his perfect life: glittering career, beautiful wife, two healthy boys and a big house in the suburbs.

But he also has his secrets. That's why Paul has promised his wife a romantic weekend getaway. He proclaims this day, a warm Friday in May, will be the best day ever.

Paul loves his wife, really, he does. But he also wants to get rid of her. And with every hour that passes, Paul ticks off another stage in his elaborately laid plan....

Behind Closed Doors meets Liane Moriarty in this creepy, fast-paced psychological thriller with a twist you won't see coming!

dog walker sussex

The narrator kept the underlying feeling of menace brilliantly. A very different but enjoyable story.

Excellent, menacing story, very well narrated!

This was an unexpectedly excellent find for me. The characters are well drawn. It is beautifully written and, until the last chapter, is told from the point of view of an unpleasant, psychopath husband. I won’t say more in order to avoid spoilers.

Great narrator

This narrator plays the part of creepy narcissistic sociopath to a tee!

Good story made even better by the narrator

predictable

This book was ok however the plot was very predictable. No unexpected as suggested, certainly not thrilling in my opinion.

Brilliantly written & engrossing.

*Spoilers*
You would think the author has had many years of experience of working with people with narcissistic personality disorder it's so well written but I don't think she has. Unless she has had personal experience of course. I'm glad that she recognised that although highly dangerous, someone with Paul's condition is highly susceptible to failure and a failure to see the obvious due to his literally blinding narcissism. A trait which many stories and movies ignore for storytelling reasons. I have only one small gripe which is I honestly don't think Paul would have been able to successfully take down an ex special ops guy with a surprise stranglehold...

Great

I planned into my day to be able to listen as much as possible. The story unravelled almost with a hypnotic rhythm. I adjusted to the narrating style which added to the main character. Glad I stuck with it. Great.

Disappointingly dull

The book starts off really slowly, as it’s essentially a monologue. I persevered, but found that none of the developments surprised me. It also felt a little repetitive. Disappointed.

Best day ever… when it ended.

Absolutely a waste of time. Couldn’t wait for it to be over. Boring, slow, depressing and predictable. Never written a bad review here but couldn’t not.

Best page turner in a very long time.

I read this book in one day. From the minute you are introduced to Paul and Mira an unsettling feeling begins to loom. Having been in a relationship that was just as toxic I thank my lucky stars I found the strength to leave. Unfortunately, I didn't have a wealthy family to help me! Paul's playlist sent shivers down my spine. For every Mira out there, this is how to escape and for every Paul out there, get yourself some therapy!
Great read.
