Summary

No one knows what goes on...

Detective Sergeant Jessica Daniel has barely left her house in months, isolated from friends and colleagues. She may have given up on herself, but one man is sure she still has something to offer.

DCI Jack Cole gives her a chance at redemption: an opportunity to help a neighbouring force by discovering what is going on with a reclusive community living in a stately home in the middle of nowhere.

People are going missing, turning up dead with only vague links back to the house. But can Jessica beat her own demons in time to find out exactly what's going on behind closed doors?

Good undercover story

The story is a change from the norm for Jessica Daniel, she goes undercover and whilst the reclusive community story has been told many times, you'll find that this is a whole new take on the subject and I was kept guessing all the way through.

Worth the wait!

Another great Jessica Daniel book in the series. I think they should be read in order although seems to be one not available on audible which is the book before this so some gaps I feel missing?
Still a great listen. Off to start the next one.

The best in the Series!

Any additional comments?

This is an excellent book. I truly couldn't 'put it down'. I constantly sought opportunities to listen to it, I even lost sleep. It is genuinely full of suspense and not predictable. It was quite a ride and I now have 'book hangover'. Becky Hindley's narration is also excellent as always.

One year later ...

This book is set a year after "Thicker than water". As the main story unfolds we also get a series of flashback chapters that reveal what has been happening in Jessica's life. I mention this as it's not immediately obvious that this is what is happening and I initially thought I'd missed a book somewhere.
If you've enjoyed the rest of the series I see no reason why you won't enjoy this book. There's not the same interaction with the usual team but given the context of the story that's appropriate. As a one off I enjoyed it though I'm not sure if I personally want this to be a permanent career development for Jessica.

Had to stop reading this after an hour

This story may have a high degree of truth - I understand the technicalities of control and domestic abuse, but that does not automatically make for a good read. I stopped reading at honeymoon stage. Okay that isn't really giving the plot a chance to develop but the scenes set in the present gave some pretty heavy handed hints as to how Grace was living. i gave it a chance after Millie's accident at the wedding but by then was feeling a bit claustrophobic and bored.
Have we women not yet learned that looks are deceptive.

Wow, what a read!

First of all I'm loving the whole series. Highly recommended it. This book is very different to ones before it, but it was excellent. Becky is also a brilliant narrator. As we know, it can make or break it. Must go, need to buy the next one!

Great story

Not as good as her other books, but still worth a listen in my opinion.

Average to dull

Not a great example of the genre. A bit plodding. Lots of tiresome backstory. Pulling out all the stops in an effort to make the main female character more interesting/ sympathetic. When you cut away the trimmings it turns out to be another story about a psychotic female. This time it’s the unlikely story of a psychotic female given to torturing and murdering pretty young females ( and a few males) as a way of generating online content. Not really a credible narrative. I think I have asked in other reviews for a moratorium on this kind of fiction. Again, enough already.
