Publisher's Summary

Over the years, terrible things keep happening to Anna Ray on February 17. First, there was the childhood trauma she's never been able to speak about. Then, to her horror, her husband killed himself on that date.

A year later and a thousand miles away, Anna tries to find solace in the fresh start of a new job in a new place. She takes comfort in her outspoken cousin Jeannie, the confidant and best friend who's there whenever she needs help. On the day of the dreaded anniversary, Anna and Jeannie hit the town, planning to ease the pain with an alcohol-induced stupor and then sleep....

When Anna awakes the next morning, she thinks she can put one more February 17 behind her, but fate is about to intervene in the form of two gruesome murders with eerie similarities to her violent past. This time, however, she won't be an abandoned daughter or a grieving widow. This time, she'll be a suspect.

    "Riveting read!"
What did you love best about Baggage?

The characters of Anna and Jeanie were so relatable. Flawed and tragic yet we could be best friends. I loved their connection throughout and how they held each other up in times of tragedy. They were cousins but choose to be sisters.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I couldn't stop listening. I found myself driving aimlessly around my small town just to get in a few more chapters.

Have you listened to any of Amy McFadden’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was the first of Amy McFadden's that I listened to, but I will be looking for more of her narrations. Terrific performance.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There were moments I teared up and moments I laughed. Thoroughly enjoyed every part of the book. S. G. Redling is a master storyteller.

    "Great read!"

Perfectly paced, great character development, awesome use of backstory, and a mystery that'll keep you guessing without all the red herrings and obvious distractions that so many authors seem to rely on. How have I never heard of this author before? I loved everything about this book, and I'll definitely be looking for more from S.G. Redling.

"Great Mystery with a Real Twist"

There are two mysteries running through this novel. One involves the heroine's past, the other a murder of a professor at the university where she works. And there is a third mystery, how is her past connected to the murder. That should be enough to show us where the twist lies, but its a far cry from explaining what will happen. I can tell you I was surprised at the conclusion and even more pleased at how it all makes sense.

Amy Mcfadden pulls off one of the best performances I have experienced. I would put her up there with Kathleen Early and Caroline Lee.

JUSTICE, CAN TAKE A SPA DAY
Redling is a great word smith and is good at developing characters. I wanted to read another one of her books, after listening to OURSELVES. Ourselves is a sort of vampire, alternate race among us type book and I really loved it. I am sorry to say for my own taste, this book, though well written and with some easy to like characters, is Chick Lit and not my cup of coffee. Redling lives in West Virginia and her description of the area is beautiful, making me want to move there.

    BED YES, HEAD NO
As others have mentioned, the main character is a bit depressing. Her husband died and she is now an alcoholic. Still, she is likable and her co-worker is the dream person to work with. Two and a half hours of, I got drunk, don't know where I spend the night, hate my mother, need someone else to take care of me, want to hide in the world of academia, I want to sleep with him, but not have a relationship, death surrounds me, whoa feelings!!, was enough to chase this He-Man, give me sophomoric weirdness away. I am trying to say, it is well written, but I am the wrong audience and you might be the right audience.

FASHION AND I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN STRANGERS
Narrators are almost as personal as writers. I like Dick Hill, Anne Flosnik and Kate Mulgrew, while others so don't. I thought McFadden was great.

"Another Book People Either Loved or Hated!"

For the most part I agreed with those who loved it. I wanted to keep listening and was anxious to get back to it when I had the chance. I thought the narrator did a great job. I was left a bit confused about what actually happened with her parents - but maybe I missed something along the way as that part of the story was told in flashbacks through a child's eyes, a child who didn't really grasp what had happened.

Anyway, I recommend it, especially as the price is quite low.

    "Enthralling Listen!"
Where does Baggage rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This has been one of my favorite audiobooks, as evidenced by the fact that I've never felt moved to write a review before.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Even when I thought I had everything figured out, I was wrong. I liked how it managed to touch on several different genres. There was the mystery/thriller aspect, but also drama and a little bit of (dark) comedy as well.

What does Amy McFadden bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She gave every character a very distinct voice.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely! I only listen to audiobooks while I'm at work, and the day just flew by. I was disappointed when my work day was over, because I wasn't finished with the book, and wouldn't be able to listen again until the next day.

    Any additional comments?

I had previously listened to Flowertown by the author, and so took a chance on Baggage. I'm so glad I did! I think I actually enjoyed it more. The quirky characters and their backstories made it so much more than just a mystery. I'd recommend it to anyone.

    "Hated for it to end"

This was a really good book that caught my attention immediately and kept it. My only complaint is that it wrapped up too quickly. I really loved the narrator & found her voice so comfortable I felt like I was listening to my best friend. I will definitely look for more books by this author and more narration by the narrator.

Completely enjoyed this latest story by author, S.G. Redling. It kept me interested in the characters and their interaction. Wonderful job by the narrator as well. My first time listening to her, and it won't be the last.

"I wish I could get the wasted hours back"

This was terrible. From the beginning the narrators voice annoyed me. She sounded like a "valley girl" from the 80s. The story was drawn out & very boring. It was painful to listen and I could not pay attention because it was That Dull. Must admit, I didn't finish. Just couldn't bring myself to spend any additional time waiting for something to happen.
Don't waste your time! There are far too many others to listen to.
