Well, children will be children and teenagers are no exception
The first thing to ask is this. Why did they not clear out the basement before the students arrived knowing that they’d be curious about the idea of having a dorm in an asylum because of its mystery? It’s one of those books that would work as a movie but I’m not sure aboout it as a book. It’s not especially well written and the plot is predictable and a mite implausivle in places so that you’re left thinking that it might have worked better with more explanation though you can work out what might have happened and what may have been left out. It passed a few hours tolerably well though but gramatically well, to coin a phrase it sucks.
