Summary
A beautiful June day in the Yorkshire Dales, and a group of children are spending the last of their half-term freedom swimming in the river near Hindswell Woods. But the idyll is shattered by their discovery of a man's body, hanging from a tree. DI Annie Cabott soon discovers he is Mark Hardcastle, the well-liked and successful set designer for the Eastvale Theatre's current production of Othello. Everything points to suicide, and Annie is mystified. Why would such a man want to take his own life?
Then Annie's investigation leads to another shattering discovery, and DCI Alan Banks is called back from the idyllic weekend he had planned with his new girlfriend. Banks soon finds himself plunged into a shadow-world where nothing is what it seems, where secrets and deceit are the norm, and where murder is seen as the solution to a problem. The deeper he digs the more he discovers that the monster he has awakened will extend its deadly reach to his friends and family.
Nobody is safe.

Unhappy listener
Awful reader, ruined story for me. The voice reading this story was expressionless and dull. Needs life and vigour to be more enjoyable

Agonisingly bad narrator
I've never reviewed anything in my life, but found listening to this narrative so torturous I felt I must save other people from it!
Really, really, really irritating. Long pauses, bad accents, inconsistent accents - just dreadful in every way I'm afraid!
It ruined the whole story for me.

Poor narrator
I usually listen to a sample of any book I buy but on this occasion I did not. A pity, because had I done so I would never have bought it. The narrator seemed unable to differentiate between one voice and another so one was left wondering who was who exactly. The book may well be worth more than one star but unfortunately I could not bring myself to finish it. With so many superb actors out there who could bring a telephone book to life had they a mind to, it seems a pity that this particular one was selected.

Good story but awful narrator
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
Someone who doesn't care who's reading it.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Change the narrator. Sometimes I wonder if anyone listens to the books before they go out for people to listen.
How could the performance have been better?
Im repeating myself by saying it"s the narrator that spoilt it for me.
What character would you cut from All the Colours of Darkness?
None. The story was great.

What a horrible narration
The actor that reads this book is absolutely unprofessional
No only he has an unpleasant voice and wooden manner of speech , he also can not play.
An exaggerated nasal performances that pass in his mind for acting and speaking with different characters voices are actually beyond bad
Gave the book back because I could not stand it anymore

All the Colours of Darkness Peter obinson
Not sure I should review this before finishing this audible but all the Inspector Banks books I have read and listened to are just an absolute joy.
As with any series it is always best to start at Book 1, but in the case of Banks it doesn't matter so much as Peter Robinson cross references.
I first listened to him courtesy of my local library on disc, subsequently in hardback, then audible and also kindle, so I have enjoyed his works through all medias, although I do not look at unabridged as I think you loose a lot ......

Perfectly Good Narrator
I was almost put off reading this title by the first review, above, which claims that the narrator fails to distinguish characters' voices. Happy to have tried, however, because the narrator is perfectly good ... I'm not sure what lies behind the first reviewer's comments, but I couldn't recognize the problem mentioned there. The narrator does a fine job on the text, and there's no problem at all telling characters apart. Oh, and the story is good too!

Disappointing
I didn’t think this storyline was as good as usual. It appeared a bit “Wild West” at times. The narration wasn’t great. Some of the voices were grating.

Shame about the narration
Good story with some nice twists and turns.
Completely poor narration. Awful voice characterisations and over dramatic pauses and slow recital.
Only way it was even partially acceptable was to to play it a faster speed 1.2 or 1.5
