Summary

Two damaged children: Teddy Brex, whom no-one loved, and so found it easier to relate to objects or things which never let him down; and Francine Hill, who was discovered sitting by the body of her mother, her skirt red with blood. She couldn’t tell the police or her father anything to help track down the killer.... Children grow up in different ways. Teddy became a handsome young man, Francine was beautiful - a sight for sore eyes. But it was death that brought them together.

Excellent story, well narrated

Another from the Plus Catalogue and another great listen. I will continue catching up with Ruth Rendell non-Wexford novels - a bit old fashioned in places due to their age, but good characters. Threlfall was excellent as narrator. Recommended

An incredible story

I can only say that this was brilliant! Right from the very beginning through to the end. The narration was superb.
One of the best Ruth Rendell books I’ve listened to.

A very different thriller

Excellent book with many twists and turns. My main criticism is the slow(ish) start, although it gradually became apparent that this was an essential part of setting the scene for future happenings, and - for me, at least (not being great at remembering names) the sheer number of different people with often only nebulous interconnections took some keeping up with.

Thoroughly enjoyed my first Ruth Rendell read so beautifully by David Threlfall. Totally absorbing and unpredictable. Binge listened over 2 days. Loved it. Great storytelling by a master.

Brilliant

Brilliantly written but more so read. David Threlfall is superb…one of my favourite actors and while quite monotone in delivery for once this is just right for this book …building suspense in just the right way. I don’t know why he gets that delivery right and others don’t but with him it’s superb. His classical training perhaps …his Shakespearien acting experience perhaps, but it is balanced, well delivered and gives an edge to the whole story; so often I hear this kind of delivery and it’s almost as if the person reading hasn’t read the book, like they have no idea where the suspense should lie and it infuriates me.
This is a gripping book and the first of RR’s that I’ve listened to outside of tte Wexford stories and this is many times better in my mind to those. Clever, gripping, beautifully read and with a brilliant ending. Can’t recommend this highly enough.

The first of two leading down to The Vault…

So enjoyed this gripping tale with such depth, narrative richness and complex plotting. Use of place so believable you could go and find it, dangerous relationships and tension ramping up by the minute. I loved it and went on to download The Vault straight after, kept me listening through a difficult time personally. Audible is the best of company I am delighted to have discovered this at the beginning of the first lock down, thank goodness for it!
