Summary

The sudden death of Guy Brouard after his morning swim shocks the residents of Guernsey. A generous patron and benefactor of the island since his arrival there a decade ago, his demise puts a question mark over many cherished projects.

When a young American woman is charged with the murder, her brother seeks help from the only contact he has in the UK - Deborah St James. Deborah is horrified to find that her old friend has been arrested and persuades her husband Simon to accompany her to Guernsey to avert this miscarriage of justice. There they find a tangled web of deceit and betrayal, with its origins in wartime occupation. In solving the crime, they must rely on their long-standing friendship with Inspector Lynley; they must also learn painful lessons about loyalty and trust, and the loving tyranny of family ties.

Could have benefitted from severe editing

Ok - the story line was interesting but I must say I got totalling fed up with the constant bickering of the two main characters which ruined it for me....

Excruciatingly poor American accent

The actor reading this book performs much of it very well but 2 of the main characters are American and his American accent is so terrible that it is truly hard to fathom why he was cast. The first hour of this audio book is just 2 Americans in conversation with each other and the voices he gives them are so bad that I almost gave up.
It should also be noted that Inspector Lynley does not appear in this novel at all, except to appear at the end of a telephone for 3 very brief calls. Barbara Havers does not appear.
This novel is about Deborah and Simon St James as they investigate a crime in Guernsey. The crime itself doesn’t take place until an hour into the novel. The initial pace of this story is decidedly slow. As with all Elizabeth George novels, it is well written and the twist is surprising, if somewhat unsatisfying.

Good story but too long!

The story is intriguing and well written but much of it is just unnecessary and boring. It needed much more editing. Long conversations between the main investigators etc. should. Have been cut. 26 hours listening!

Disappointing

I don't really enjoy American contexts but even allowing for that, very slow. I lasted 40 minutes and gave up. Turgid narration

A struggle

Struggled to complete this as found characters difficult to connect with. Also found the narration annoying.

Boring, depressing and too long

What does Michael Tudor Barnes bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He is fabulous at changing voice and dialect to match the characters without making them sound unnatural. Without him I wouldn't have made it to the end.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The confession.

Any additional comments?

The plot would have been OK had I been able to find more sympathy for the main character and had the depressing moods of every single person not dragged on and on.
