Summary
They call it The Heartland Child Murders. Everyone else calls it a nightmare. Locked doors don't stop him. He leaves no trace behind. He only takes little girls. His nickname: The Iceman.
A deranged serial killer roams wintry rural Nebraska with a demented purpose no one can fathom. Special Agent Emma Kane, a former DC cop and damaged goods now with the FBI, is assigned to babysit burnt-out profiler Jacob Thorne, once the best in the business but now said to have lost his edge, as they both fly to Nebraska to catch this maniac. Thorne is erratic, abrasive and unpredictably brilliant, but what he and Kane find in the heartland is much more than anyone bargained for, especially when the Iceman challenges them personally. The clock is ticking and a little girl's life is on the line. And maybe even more with that, once they find out what he's really up to.

What an ending!
I read thousands of books in my life and I have to say there aren't many I haven't guessed the ending. This had twists and turns at the end but the final ending blew me away. If you like psychological suspense and good mysteries then this is a book you must listen to. Exceptional plot and good narrator. Hoe to see more by this author.

Great listen! Great plot including great ...5
...Characters. BUT... The conclusion is the best ending I have ever read. It is totally a surprise and shockingly so. WOW!! I could use as many superlative adjectives I know and still not adequately describe how extreme the conclusion effects all that came before.
After reading my remarks, do yourself a big favor and don't let curiosity overpower you to read the conclusion first. You'll be very sorry you ruined a great mystery!

SURPRISE
Ok, I must say this was a B I G surprise!! Firstly, I can't believe I am giving this book a 5 star rating as the content of the story was totally gross....I meAn I'm not sure anything that deals with children would be considered a good read and this went waaaayyyyyy beyond that. Then the lead male character is totally repulsive....he's arrogant and mean tempered...and just unlikable. Then the amount of profanity is off the roof....and I'm not a prude but it was quite excessive. I thought the narrator did a good job distinguishing the different characters. However and I must repeat this, the content was disturbing in so many ways......but I could not stop listening to it. It sucked me in and I just had to "know what happened"....then you think you got your surprise, but nope.....the surprise is still there just waiting to pounce on you....and it does.just that. It pounces!!

Fantasy but a great book
This book was filled with generalizations and sexism. For example, the first page says that “some women are addicted to soap operas, pills, and Facebook.” Like no! That’s so far from the truth. I want to know what statistics said this idiocy.
The one woman who was in this book acted too much like a man. A lot of the things she said, thought, and did were too masculine. For example, no woman who thinks she’s hot would be working as an FBI agent or law enforcement she would be super girly getting manicures, taking selfies, and enjoy being in the limelight. Kane knew she was so gorgeous and beautiful that she wanted to hide the fact that she was every mans dream by never wearing skirts or makeup to play down her beauty. In a men’s mind that might make sense but me as a female reader that’s going to be a negative.
Also, I have to agree with most if not all readers that said that there were too much unnecessary curse words in the book.
The ending made me upset, like why? I don’t mind a cliffhanger but don’t end it that way. The narrator read it too much like an announcer so his voice was rather annoying.
I thought that Thorne was way too clever and knew everything from the jump. They didn’t really investigate any leads or interviewed witnesses or tried to piece the puzzle together. It was like because Thorne said so then it’s true and then voila it was true.
Also the fight scene with the captain was so uncalled for. That would’ve been grounds for suspension if not dismissal.
Also, I’m a police officer and I love working with other agencies and when the FBI gets involved we’re all enamored by them involving us in anything. We police officers enjoy the company of other police officers. I’m not sure why many authors like to make FBI agents as attention hoarders and know-it-alls and police officers are territorial and clueless. No matter how good of a profiler you are you get leads and must follow them and make sure they pan out. Nothing comes easy and if they were then there wouldn’t be a show called America’s Most Wanted and there wouldn’t be unsolved cases all around and certainly there wouldn’t be a need for police officers when you have FBI profilers who knows everything by just talking to you in less than five minutes.

I've listened to the story multiple times
Thorne is a quiet badass but I won't give any specifics since that would ruin the story for you. I loved what a strong character his female partner, Kane, was. She was determined, smart and capable. The suspense story was solid and the narrator did an excellent job.

Slick Thriller!
Anytime a review says the ending will keep you guessing is a good read. This was no exception with intriguing characters, vivid scenery and expert narration. A spellbinding and driving thriller that desperately needs a follow up to the ending.
