Summary

There was only one reason Manchester-based private eye Kate Brannigan was prepared to let her boyfriend help out with the investigation into a car sales fraud - nothing bad could happen. But by now Kate should know that with Richard you have to expect the unexpected. With the unexpected being Richard behind bars, Kate seems to be the obvious choice to look after his eight-year-old son - who proves even more troublesome than his father.

Kate finds herself dragged into a world of drug traffickers, child pornographers, fraudsters and violent gangland enforcers...bringing her face to face with death in the most terrifying investigation of her career.

Lots better...

After the first book I am now more used to Chloe Massey’s narration. The distinction between the different voices/characters was easier to follow :-)
I really enjoy the humour, metaphors and similes used by Kate Brannigan..
Looking forward to the next book in the series.

another cracking adventure - pun intended

brilliant narrator, who brings the main character realistically to life with her practicality and to the forefront, great relationships development gripping story just shame she can't stick to the white-collar crime.

I love her ever-increasing circle of friends and the personal life if element that comes in but towards the end and there was what I consider annoying increase in tension one of the nice things about the first book is that she behave properly for the most part in regards to procedure and her safety the increasing reliance on breaking and entering etc makes it pretty similar to other Private Eye detective novels out there I actually like the fresh take and the complexities of white-collar crime and fraud and I wish there has been an increased element and then for this going forward you don't need petrol to make it interesting
That being said I did genuinely enjoy every minute

OK but not one of the best

I really like Val McDermid but for some reason this story just didn’t really grip me in the way others have until the end, which is much more satisfying. I did make it to the end which is testament in itself to being a reasonable story but in my view just not the calibre I’ve come to expect. The narrator was OK but there were times when I felt she was a little monotone and as a consequence I drifted away from the story too easily. It’s entertaining enough.

Really good plot and narration

This is the second Kate Brannigan book I’ve listened to this month and I really like her as a character. Even though it was written a while ago, it’s still relevant. Good plot and well-paced. The narrator is brilliant, suits the character perfectly.

Good book

I have not come across a Val McDermid book I have not liked, and this one was another interesting murder mystery with a few hidden twists and turns. Worth a listen.

Audio bliss

Author Val McDermick and narrator Chloe Massey: audio bliss! Every time, without exception.

Love the plots, the characters, the sense of humour, the accent and their delivery. Imo, this is as good as it gets in the crime/detective world

Not bad

A little formulaic. Not in Sara Paretsky's league, but perfectly acceptable. I would read another.
