Mhairi McFarlane
Bel’s joined the tiny Manchester office of a national paper from her indie podcast.
Thirty-something Connor is going to back to the start as the new intern.
The latest office news? They can’t stand each other.
So of course Bel bumps into Connor when she’s working undercover on the biggest scoop of her career. And of course she’s forced to improvise, pretending they’re a couple. A couple deeply in love.
Two rivals. One fake romance. The headline writes itself…
★★★★★A five-star read!★★★★★
'This book is an absolute joy from start to finish. The chemistry between Bel and Connor is electric, and it’s impossible not to get sucked into their witty back-and-forth'★★★★★
'Mhairi McFarlane has done it again. At this point I think I'd even love reading her shopping lists' ★★★★★
'Cover Story is another winner'★★★★★
'The characters are so well written and true to life… a joy to read'★★★★★

Belle and Connor, colleagues, don’t like each other, until they do. This book is full of misunderstandings, misreadings of each other’s motives, and judgments based on limited information. It’s not until they start working together on a “me too” story, pretending to be a couple whilst working to bring down a local politician, that they start to unravel all those misunderstandings, and realise their judgments about each other might not be correct.
However, it’s a painful process as they each face their own demons and at the same time try to feign indifference about the other. There are the usual cast of characters you’d come to expect, over the top friends (I love Shilpa!), entertaining family members, and snakes in the grass exes. The only criticism I have, and this goes for most of her books is, I would have really loved an epilogue. Where do they go from here? Does he move north? Does she move south? Just a bit more please!
The narrator did a really great job distinguishing between characters.
Another great listen
