Summary

"Cousin Phillis" (1864) is a novel by Elizabeth Gaskell about Paul Manning, a youth of seventeen who moves to the country and befriends his mother's family and his second cousin Phillis Holman, who is confused by her own placement at the edge of adolescence. Most critics agree that Cousin Phillis is Gaskell's crowning achievement in the short novel. The story is uncomplicated; its virtues are in the manner of its development and telling.

Disappointing Narration

I found it impossible to get involved in this story and its characters as the narration was so poor that it was a distraction: inaccurate and inconsistent accents, some very weird pronunciations, wrongly emphasised sentences.... As it was only short I persevered until the end - partly driven by a fascination to see how much worse the narration could get - it was a relief when it ended.

Really?

Did anyone at Audible actually listen to any of this before putting it on sale? I bought the book as I have very much enjoyed Elizabeth Gaskell books before, but I couldn't endure more than a few minutes of this narrator. Very poor. Thankfully it was only a few pence, but a waste of time. The story rating is simply a guess based on previous books, as it seemed to start well.

uninteresting and boring

Such a waste of time for author and reader. I listened for some time trying to find some meat, but pure rice.
