Summary
Paris, 1939. Torn apart by war, Saffron Courtney and Gerhard von Meerbach are thousands of miles apart, both struggling for their lives. Gerhard - despite his objections to the Nazi regime - is fighting for the Fatherland, hoping to one day have the opportunity to rid Germany of Hitler and his cronies. But as his unit is thrown into the hellish attrition of the Battle of Stalingrad, he knows his chances of survival are dwindling by the day.
Meanwhile, Saffron - recruited by the Special Operations Executive and sent to occupied Belgium to discover how the Nazis have infiltrated SOE's network - soon finds herself being hunted by Germany's most ruthless spymaster. Confronted by evil beyond their worst imaginings, the lovers must each make the hardest choice of all: sacrifice themselves, or do whatever they can to survive, hoping that one day they will be reunited.
Courtney's War is an epic story of courage, betrayal and undying love that takes the listener to the very heart of a world at war.

Good listen
This was an easy book to listen to for a long time. I didn't find myself loosing where I was in the story. Very well researched and the narration was spot on. It's my first Wilbur Smith and I'll probably listen to a few more. It is a stand alone book even though it does have a few references to previous books in the series.

Narrator not the best
As always with Wilbur Smith a great story, my biggest gripe was with the narrator almost whispering at times. I do most of my listening in the car and struggled to hear the narrative at times which us most frustrating.

Best Wilbur Smith book yet
All the Wilbur Smith books I’ve read have been largely set in Africa. Courtney’s War is set in WW2 so barely touches Africa. Multiple story lines all come today to create a beautiful and powerful piece of work

Epic storytelling
Great story with the backdrop of WW2 from both sides representing the German solders not the SS
With a love story that doesn’t get in the way, female bravery and male courage fought by self sacrifice in ideals that makes us human
Narrator Barrett that could make a phone book interesting
Gives a great historical journey

A cracking story
Another cracking book by Wilbur Smith with good narration by Sean Barrett. Hard not to keep listening. Such heart wrenching pieces about how the Germans treated the Jews and other prisoners. The personal lives of Gerhardt and Saffie and how the war affected them both brought tears to my eyes, and got the pulse racing.
The South African accents and pronunciations were a bit off, but if you’ve never lived there you might not notice that. Well done! I’d thoroughly recommend this book
