Summary

Master mythologist Martin Shaw uses story to examine our broken relationship with the world!

Myth is our wild way of telling the truth, of sharing stories that have our living earth speaking through them. There is an old insistence that we each have a twin we know nothing about. A wild, curious twin that was thrown out the window the night we were born, taking much of our energy with them.

This story is a quest to find and court our wild twin, for they have something important to tell us. If there was something we were here to do in our few, brief years, we can be sure that the wild twin is holding the key.

In Courting the Wild Twin, Martin Shaw, an accomplished storyteller and scholar of myth and oral tradition, explores two ancient myths concerned with the wild twin and shares how vital they are to our ability to confront challenges with purpose, courage and creativity.

Myths are our secret weapon. They have a radical agency of beauty in our age of amnesia, an agency far beyond concept and polemic.

Five stars for Dr. Shaw

The (possibly) mad (and certainly) genius that is Dr Martin Shaw never fails to hit the mark with his wit, vision and wisdom. In 'Courting the Wild Twin' he brings us two traditional tales - twin tales, no less - rich with allegory and symbolism, that hold up a mirror to some of our own, 21st century, predicaments. This is a book to return to time and time again and each hearing will bring fresh insights.
Having listened to this magical book in the midst of the Coronavirus outbreak, I couldn't help but be struck by these prophetic lines:
"...And in that darkness
We remember what we love the most..."

Spellbinding, ancient, timely and wonderful

I can't get enough of this book. It is an absolute gem and gets better with each listen. I've lost count of how many times I've heard the addictive tones reveal a new angle each time it's played. I've bought the hard copy to and keep passing it on to friends and having to buy another. Love it. highly recommended.

Beautiful poetic exploration of life

Martin’s use of the vehicle of story and folktale to explore the depths of the human soul and it’s response to the wider world is done with subtlety and eloquence; yet it compels one to reach inside and discover anew.

His performance is as you would expect of a storyteller, flawless and intriguing.

Wonderful! And very timely

It's a remarkable book. It's beautiful, numinous and earthy. It's about the big things 'out there' and the even bigger things inside us and the connections..

Th God father who was missing from my table.

How I wish that Martin’s soft tones had been on hand to sing me through my adolescence unfolding.
A beautiful invitation to walk through ones own wildness with a guide who can put name to all the coloured threads of our tapestry.
This journey has been a true gift and all I can say is thank you for whispering the spell.

Mythic jewels

A fascinating plunge into the nuances of folk tale. Studying two folks tales, on with male protagonists and one with female, both illustrating the two sides of when situations clash with what is socially acceptable. And each with a resolution appropriate to their gender. I especially enjoyed the book being read by the author. The presence of his knowledge, his tone and rhythm took my listening deeper.

A wonderful offering - a must listen

Put simply, this book is a wonderful gift. Fluently and smoothly narrated, the words and sentiment spoke to my soul on a level I haven’t experienced for some time. A candid and thoughtful offering that I will listen to many more times in the coming months.

Bloody brilliant!

Fantastic book & read so wonderfully by Martin Shaw. I love how he processes each story.
There are so many lines I resonate with.
Where is my own wild self? Martin offers us a chance to reflect on such musings. For which I am grateful, its let me wander down the less conventional paths I harbour inside. Take a full look at the parts of me cast-off in striving for 'achievement' a conventional blight which we inflict on ourselves.
This book is in opposition to such things, it is a hand outstretched with wild offerings.

A Tale about Tales by the Teller of Tales

Martin Shaw is an exemplary storyteller of ancient tradition. This book speaks truths universal and is precisely what the world of today needs. You will not be disappointed. And Shaw's reading is that of the highest order, the tenor of a man with years of living within story.

A story told for our time.

I enjoyed the storytelling of Martin Shaw. He challenges us to consider what do we want to birth in this world? How can we see beauty when it’s not pretty every day? He cajoles us to hold paradox as an opportunity for a new way of perceiving. And makes the storytelling of myths a vehicle for considering how to transform our lives and our world into one of more vibrancy and balance.

Prepare for internal explosions

I've no idea how to write some words that would even hint at the experience of listening to this book. Beware the wild twin. She won't let you go back to your tidy life.....

Care to hear a tale or two?

A beautifully narrated, sometimes-inspiring, sometimes-frustrating, mythopoetic telling that is equal-parts self-help and campfire tale. My own frustration with the work is that more words were used to explicitly state the dire importance of myth over and over again than were actually used to illustrate this supposed transformative power in ordinary people's lives. Still, this unusual work abounds with enough primal vitality and carefully crafted prose to make it easy to recommend.

What a lovely book!

Martin Shaw is such a masterful storyteller! The book inspires and condemns as one would a child. When listening to it, it felt as though I was outside of time, which is such a nice feeling to slow down and relax, with my attention solely on the magic Mr Shaw reintroduces into everyday life.

10/10 - if I could listen to it for the first time again, I would
