Summary

Young Kitty Charing stands to inherit a vast fortune from her irascible great-uncle Matthew - provided she marries one of her cousins. Kitty is not wholly adverse to the plan, if the right nephew proposes. Unfortunately, Kitty has set her heart on Jack Westruther, a confirmed rake, who seems to have no inclination to marry her anytime soon. In an effort to make Jack jealous, and to see a little more of the world than her isolated life on her great-uncle's estate has afforded her, Kitty devises a plan. She convinces yet another of her cousins, the honorable Freddy Standen, to pretend to be engaged to her. Her plan would bring her to London on a visit to Freddy's family and (hopefully) render the elusive Mr. Westruther madly jealous. Thus begins Cotillion, arguably the funniest, most charming of Georgette Heyer's many delightful Regency romances.

Cotillion is here presented in Naxos AudioBooks style, with classical music enhancing the production. This is the first of two Heyer titles planned for 2009. Clare Wille was widely praised for her reading of Cranford.

Why the music?

Why ruin a good book with a lot of music? Less music and more of the novel would have been a better choice by far.

Competent but not brilliant

Firstly this is ABRIDGED, so you will miss many of your favourite lines eg "you have your own armour, do you not Frederick" "french Gabster!" etc. It is competently read, the reader does a good job with Freddy and Kitty, but is not as sure with some of the minor characters. I'd say pay the extra money and get the unabridged version. If your love Georgette Heyer, you will want every line.

An Abbreviated Cotillion

This abridged version covers the main plot lines and the narrator is good, but as a Georgette Heyer fan I was disappointed: some of my favorite passages were omitted. I will never buy an abridged book again.

Unfortunately, this is abridged

I was a third of the way through when I realized some of my favorite passages, little exchanges of witticisms or dialogue between the characters, weren’t coming when I expected them. Turns out almost half of the book’s content is missing. I wish it had been more clearly stated in the advertising.

For those who wish to enjoy the full wit of Georgette Heyer’s writing, especially the dialogue between the characters where she particularly shines, go for the excellent version narrated by Phyllida Nash.

Good performance but get the full version

I enjoyed Claire Willem's reading of Cotillion but the abridged version left so much of the comedic parts of the story! this is my favorite Heyer book because it was hilarious and Freddy is a gem but it doesn't show that too much in this version.

Best hero EVER!! favorite Heyer of all!

I love Freddie! Kitty is a good heroine as well. The story is amusing and light and everyone good gets exactly what is best! The perfect book for me. I wish it was unabridged but some of this book is better than none.

Disappointing and annoying

Not one of Heyer's best. Music between chapters to pad out the length of the recording was jarring and annoying.

Sweet story

Cotillion is such an adorable story. One of the better Georgette Heyer books. It's sweet and endearing, and of course so funny.

I like the twist on the hero in this story. Freddy is such a nice guy and really seems to grow up in the story. Interestingly, Jack reminds me a lot of Tracy Belmanoir from the Black Moth. Many of his mannerisms are very similar. Of course Jack is not sinister like Tracy, well not exactly, but he definitely had his rakish moments.

All in all, the story flows well, has a lot of rich details, and doesn't really have any slow parts. This recording is from an abridged version though and unfortunately it does leave out some key info, I think. But still entertaining!

Loved it! Such a cute and sweet story. My first Georgette Heyer and not my last. The narrator was very enjoyable to listen to. Really enjoyed the humor in this story.

Abridged version with too much music- stay away

This is not the full book and the full book is so delightful. There is way too much music between each chapter, which overlaps the reading.. The narrator isn’t bad.
