Si può appartenere a una tradizione senza esserne prigionieri? E si può immaginare la propria identità senza ricorrere alla metafora delle radici? La risposta è sì, basta riflettere su che cosa significa, propriamente, ciascuna di queste parole: per rendersi conto che l’identità, oggetto indefinibile, proprio per questo ha un disperato bisogno di metafore per essere maneggiata; che la tradizione non è qualcosa che si eredita per via genetica - o che la memoria trasmette meccanicamente da una generazione all’altra - ma la si costruisce e la si insegna passo dopo passo, che le radici, infine, sono un’immagine ingannevole ed escludente.
