Summary

Every witch knows the rules: Stick to your own kind. Never reveal your powers to outsiders. Take a consort from the witching families or kiss your magic good-bye forever.

For years I've been quiet, obedient Rose Hallowell. I accepted the man my stepmother chose for me. But I never stopped missing my long-ago friends.

Now we're back on my childhood estate to arrange my marriage. The boys I grew up with? They're still in town - and they haven't forgotten me either. And damn if they haven't grown up well.

They've got no magic, no place in my life. But they're charming and sweet and infuriatingly hot, and I can't seem to stay away. The more I try to resist, the more secrets I uncover about my family, my betrothal, and everything I thought was true about the witching world.

I've been lied to. I've been betrayed. So to claim my magic and my happiness, I'll break every rule there is - and then some.

Don't mess with this witch. Every rose has thorns.

Contains mature themes.

be prepared to use two credits

there isn't much character development and youll need the next book to get to any kind of resolution. I held on waiting for something more to happen, It doesn't. It's like being asked on a date and then being asked to pay. There was some potential to explore unconventional relationships, but it fell short without the character development.

Great Idea, Slow Execution- Not sure I will buy book 2

Narration makes audio books, and this narration left something to be desired. Despite have both a male and female narrator, each chapter was read specifically by one or the other, instead of having the male narrator read the male thoughts and dialog and the female narrator reading the female thoughts and dialog. This was further complicated as all the male characters ready by the male narrator sounded exactly the same, and his impersonation of the female characters voice was off-putting enough to draw your attention away from the story. The female narrator was much much better than her male counterpart. Plot was interesting, even if it was slowly executed for how short the book is- making this feel like one full book broken into two just to make more money. And the bridge from book one into book wasn’t quite interesting enough for me to ensure I spent that money on book 2. The book was good without out being overly crude, and if the narration had been better I would have ignored the slow pacing. I would buy a paper copy instead.

only if you don’t get hung up on the details

As there is some sex involved, this has to be classified as UpperYA, but the writing feels like it’s geared more toward a pre to mid-teen audience. For as much of a reader as Rose is supposed to be, she’s incredibly stupid in not questioning Celestine about Everything she knows related to the Hallowell family. Did she have anything to do with Rose’s mother’s death? Does she know if someone else was responsible? Was it truly not due to any magical influence? What did Rose’s father ask Celestine to do? Why? The guys are supposed to be 25-27 years old, and Rose is just shy of her 25th birthday. They act like they’re 15-17 years old. I would expect a little more business, worldly, emotional, sexual and other life experience to come through in dialogue, thoughts or actions in this story. There is a lot of creativity and an interesting premise in Chase’s world building, but there are a lot of gaps in logic; translated into disconnects in dialogue, action and narrative. Ok if you don’t get hung up on the details, which I do. George and James do a decent enough job of narration.

This book was really slow and boring.

I struggled to finish this book this is the second time I've actually tried to read this book. And I don't think I will finish this book at all.

Loved this book, narrator Tristan not so much :-/

The book was great, and I can’t wait to listen to book 2, however, I would have liked it even more if Aletha George narrated the entire book.

Imaginary friend

She's to old to have an imaginary friend.. So juvenile that I tried listening two different times to this and still have not made it out of the first chapter... I want to return it. The reader I don't think did that bad with what she had to work with and the little amount of time I listened to it.

Fun book

One witch and four consorts. Interesting concept. The characters and story line were good. Second book will be needed to fill the questions that this book left you with to find out more.
