About this listen

Consciousness, "the last great mystery for science", remains a hot topic. How can a physical brain create our experience of the world? What creates our identity? Do we really have free will? Could consciousness itself be an illusion?

Exciting new developments in brain science are continuing the debates on these issues, and the field has now expanded to include biologists, neuroscientists, psychologists, and philosophers. This controversial book clarifies the potentially confusing arguments, and the major theories, while also outlining the amazing pace of discoveries in neuroscience. Covering areas such as the construction of self in the brain, mechanisms of attention, the neural correlates of consciousness, and the physiology of altered states of consciousness, Susan Blackmore highlights our latest findings.

Inspired thought about its subject matter; interesting. Content and delivery a little heavy but I think that comes with the topic. Mercifully relatively short as advertised. Well worth it.

Informative, only slightly heavy

This is a concise and understandable summary of a difficult topic. I thought the choice of voice actor was unusual, though; she doesn't have a bad voice or accent per se, but the voice feels more suited to a Disney character or children's book narrator than for presenting a serious popular science work.

Good accessible overview... read by Minnie Mouse!

I recommend this to anyone who is seriously curious about consciousness science! It provides a broad and easily understandable introduction to those who are new to the field. Blackmore effectively makes the science available to everyone 😊

Great survey of consciousness science

Covers all the standard areas in an understandable way, but many technical names pronounced bizarrely.
