Summary

Common Prayer helps today's diverse church pray together across traditions and denominations. With an ear to the particulars of how various liturgical traditions pray, and using an advisory team of liturgy experts, the authors have created a tapestry of prayer that celebrates the best of each tradition. Tools for prayer are scattered throughout to aid those who are unfamiliar with liturgy and to deepen the prayer life of those who are familiar with liturgical prayer.

Ultimately, Common Prayer makes liturgy dance, taking the best of the old and bringing new life to it with a fresh fingerprint for the contemporary renewal of the church. Churches and individuals who desire a deeper prayer life and those familiar with Shane Claiborne and New Monasticism will enjoy the tools offered in this book as a fresh take on liturgy.

Very good, works great with the book

This is a great recording. I have both a hard copy and a Kindle copy of the book and use the recording to listen along or to listen to on its own. Well recorded and gives a real sound and sense of community while listening, just like being with others.

I see some negative feedback about navigating around the chapters - as I understand it Audible is not able - for technical reasons - to put titles on the chapters. This means that you have a list of chapters from 1 to about 400 with no identifying markings to find the one you want. I resolved this by writing my own list so I can see that chapter 1 is Sunday evening prayer, chapter 2 is Monday and so on. I printed the list out and keep it in the back of the book. After a few times listening every day you only need move on to the next 'chapter' of listening for the next day and skip back to evening prayers.

So on the whole this is a highly recommended recording.

great to use each day which is what I needed

What did you like most about Common Prayer?

listen to it each day while following along from the website, lets me participate knowing others are as well

Any additional comments?

being picky would like the daily bible readings read out but do have another audio book that does daily bible readings so that is covered
only problem I had was I missed holy week as forgot to record what chapter it was and go to that instead of the usual date.

A Useless Waste!

As far as I can tell from endless listening this is a simple monotone reading of the Book of Common Prayer. No index. Impossible to use or locate anything in the text. A total waste of a credit. Completely the WRONG format for a book of this type. What were these people thinking?

Save your money and just buy the book.

This audio is not organized to be able to listen to today's reading, it goes through morning readings for the whole year and then begins again with noon reading for the year etc. It is read (performed) as written. Go to Amazon and look at the table of contents to see what I mean. There is no way to use this audio book in the way the real book is intended. This is very sad since the material is lovely and inspiring. I am so disappointed, the audio as organized is as useless as a list...utterly useless, I am bummed. This could have been so good, it would not have taken much to set it up to be useful, each section a day's reading in total, maybe they will re-release it someday.

Love this book, but audio it's not set up well

Would you try another book from the authors and/or the narrators?

Yes, but I'd want better navigation. In the book, the 'chapters' are actually dates. In the audio book, the chapters are numbered, not dated. To listen to today's prayers, I need to know what chapter number it is. That's a pain.

Would you recommend Common Prayer to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes. It is a great resource for daily spirituality.

This book is for you

-- no matter who you are, as Claiborne proclaims in the introduction. I'm a great admirer of Claiborne and had wondered what his energy turned to worship would be like. First I downloaded this an an ebook - which is so wonderful that I broke my rule of never buying a book in more than one format and downloaded the audio. The authors deliver what they promise, that is, they mine "the oldest and best traditions of Christian prayer and made them dance a little."

So whether you're a late middle-aged Canadian Catholic like me or any other demographic, I think there's something in here to help you create sacred space (and smile). More than having something for everyone, Common Prayer has something for all: I think this captures worship that can bridge generation and denominational gaps.

Great for Daily Energy, Remembrance, and Devotion - just one downside

I’m new to the concept of liturgy and I like the new way (to me) of approaching God on a daily basis. The people saying/singing parts of each day in unison and a cappella (sp) was awkward but It’s helping me to stretch my comfort zone.

I wish the chapters were labeled as they are in the book so I can find the day I’m on. And also could quickly find the nightly prayers.

Lastly, why, why, why did they not read the Bible references from each day? Fortunately I have the physical book to see the references so I can read the verses. The audio book should stand on its own so I don’t have to own the physical book. I bought this to have the liturgy as I travel. (The physical book is large.)

To be clear, I don’t expect the entire set of scriptures to be read I would just like to know what to read. For example, just say, “Psalm 119:34-37”. Then I’ll look up the verse in my bible and read it.

Not a huge issue in the big scheme of things, but I feel it’s a large part of liturgy and it should be part of this audio book.
