Summary

Tony Hancock stars with Sid James and Kenneth Williams in the legendary BBC Radio comedy series.

Created by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson in 1954, Hancock’s Half Hour was the radio vehicle that made Tony Hancock a household name. Each week listeners would be admitted to the sometimes fantastical, sometimes mundane life of “the lad 'imself”.

Aided and abetted by Sid James, Andrée Melly, Bill Kerr, and Kenneth Williams, Hancock would enter into the spirit of each episode with characteristic dolefulness.

Included are two radio documentaries about Tony Hancock: Stone Me, What a Life! and The Complete and Utter History of Hancock.

The episodes included are:

  • "The Pet Dog"
  • "The Jewel Robbery"
  • "The Bequest"
  • "The Blackboard Jungle"
  • "The Diet"
  • "Hancock’s Heir"
  • "The Student Price"
  • "The Greyhound Track"
  • "The Conjurer"
  • "The Test Match"

Please note: due to the archive nature of the recordings, sound quality may vary.

Amazing radio show still fresh

So many decades and yet it has not lost one bit of its appeal and humour.

The pre carry on

What made the experience of listening to Hancock's Half Hour: Series 3 the most enjoyable?

One of the best bits of listening to this is the imagination/picture the characters colourfully create. Without the need of special effects or the typical carry on scene these superb actors and actresses bring all the fun of the screen to your ear and allow you to picture as it would have been portrayed making you laugh all the more.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Hancock's Half Hour: Series 3?

My most memorable moment was the rent a mob, one character believes he is more famous than he is so to tease him, his house mates rent a mob of women from a local factory to pretend that he is indeed famous, at first this simply boosts his ego but leads ultimately to the entire household being imprisoned in their own home

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Just too many laughs to mention

Not quite the TV series character, but getting there.

Having purchased and listened to series 1 & 2, series 3 naturally followed my listening schedule. I feel this series was better than series 1&2 as it seems the Hancock character is, albeit gradually, evolving into the character I better know from the TV series. Though still not as great as the TV episodes, I am really enjoying these the more I listen to them.
