Summary

Charles Paris returns in this BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of Simon Brett’s humorous theatrical mystery, starring Bill Nighy.

A job in pantomime seems the perfect way to spend the Christmas season for Charles, but the cast of Cinderella are a motley crew from reality TV and Charles finds himself having to explain the traditions of panto to their baffled American star whose career is on a downward trajectory.

When the star is shot dead, and Charles finds the body, he finds himself under suspicion. As the slapstick makes way for a murder investigation, he decides to clear his name by doing some sleuthing of his own. With a host of suspects and the body count rising, the line 'they're behind you' soon begins to take on a very sinister meaning indeed....

Bill Nighy (Love Actually, Skylight, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) stars as Charles Paris, with Suzanne Burden as his wife Frances, in this funny and fast-paced dramatisation by Jeremy Front.

Written by Jeremy Front, based on the novel by Simon Brett.

Good fun and entertaining

One of the better of Charles Paris Mysteries (and they are all pretty good!). Plot sometimes hard to follow with too many characters all sounding the same but this one was top rate in every way. Maurice is my favourite character but they are all good.

Loved it straight from the start thanks to the great Bill Nighy and cast. Would like it to have been longer but thoroughly enjoyed. Would highly recommend.

Nighy on top form

Loved it - great performances, Bill Nighy brilliant as ever, this time acting in a panto. Very entertaining

Another winner from the Charles Paris team...

I’m a big fan of the Charles Paris series featuring Bill Nighy, and this title certainly keeps the standard flying. Short on work, as ever, Charles accepts a panto season in Margate, which boasts the latest Reality TV star in the cast plus a bona-fide Hollywood name as main star. All starts well, until tensions and cracks begin to appear, and then a cast member is found dead on the beach.

Nothing is simple in Charles’ world, and the sub-plot here is that his ‘semi-detached’ wife Frances wants to have an old-fashioned Christmas, which Charles reluctantly says he will help out with. Add to this his fraught relationship with his money-grabbing agent Maurice, and an obsessive and potentially violent stalker, you get the idea. And all the while, there’s a murder to solve…

The scripts move along at a good pace, reminiscent of Alan Ayckbourn at his best.

Makes me wish I had a long car journey to do…

Wonderful story

Really enjoyed this audio book. Not like audio theatre at its very best. Bill Nye never disappoints.
