When the Shepard's car breaks down in pre-World War II New York City, a chain of events occurs that transforms the lives of the Shepards and the Drakes, as Evan and Rachel meet, court, and marry. But betrayal, disappointment, and secret schemes are on the horizon.

As an added bonus, when you purchase our Audible Modern Vanguard production of Richard Yates' book, you'll also receive an exclusive Jim Atlas interview. This interview – where James Atlas interviews Blake Bailey about the life and work of Richard Yates – begins as soon as the audiobook ends.

Eleştirmen yorumları

"Richard Yates is among the very truest of American writers. Each of his novels and each story unfalteringly traces our destinies and rescues us from the lost. He sees eye-to-eye with every one of us." (Gina Berriault)
"One of the handful of American novelists... who can be said to have a 'vision of life.' " (New York Times Book Review)
"The lives portrayed are bleak, trivial, thwarted, vapid, but they are made memorable against all odds by Yates's high virtue as a writer. The power demonstrated in his earlier work (A Good School; The Easter Parade) is reconfirmed here; he can bring a scene, a subject, a character to sharply detailed focus through an unswerving fidelity to the grim truths of existence, related in a clear and ringing prose." (Publishers Weekly)

Beautifully and laconically read by Marc Vietor - just the right amount of irony in his voice. I was sad when it ended.

Wonderful reading

From beginning to end it's a joy. the tiny explorations of the human condition might have been painful in another's hand or over cooked and heavy. perfect and at times funny. A comfort to know this style exists
