Summary

The truth emerges one piece at a time.

When a fisherman reels in a plastic bag containing a severed human head from the depths of Cold Lake, Colorado, Sheriff David Wolf and his deputies scramble to the scene, and quickly realize there are more surprises to be found below.

Their grim discoveries reopen a cold case Wolf's father worked 22 years ago, and Wolf must try to succeed where his father failed before him. Wolf has the advantage on his dad, however, because he has bodies. Lots of them.

Amid sweeping political changes that have his department and the entire county on edge, Wolf and his deputies come to the disturbing realization that there is a dangerous serial killer in their midst - one who will stop at nothing to remain hidden.

Can Wolf and his deputies unveil the truth before someone pays the ultimate price?

This fifth installment of the David Wolf Mystery-Thriller series is chock-full of suspense, mystery, and action that will keep you riveted through the final sentence.

Gritty fast paced suspense procedural...

Wow! If I thought the first four books were good, this one is amazing!
This book involves two counties sheriff departments merging and David Wolf being sucked into a dirty fight to keep his position as sheriff.
After the severed head is fished out of a lake, it reopens a case that began two decades ago. But it now appears that the murderer never left the area because he's gone into full swing again. As divers search the lake more bodies are found. People in town are getting killed and Wolf hasn't a clue who's doing this. And then he looses someone very close to him.
Meanwhile there's a beautiful woman living alone and isolated in the woods on a mountain. Wolf fears for her safety, her parents both disappeared 20 years ago when Wolf's father (who was sheriff at that time) was investigating.
What Wolf finds when he starts digging into other towns and counties leads him to someone very close to home. Someone who almost kills him and his deputies.
The tension ratchets up and I couldn't put this down. The author does a great job fleshing out believable characters. He. vividly describes the environment and locations making it easy to "see".
Narration by Sean Patrick Hopkins is excellent.
This series has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATIONS.

Great read and listen..

Another good read from Jeff Carson. I really like Sheriff David Wolf. This one was about a fisherman who brought up a head in a plastic bag then 6 more heads were brought up by divers, as well as bags holding the rest of the victims’ other body parts. A lot of bags. AND I was surprised at what happened to Sarah, Wolf’s ex-wife, who he was dating again.

AND I was totally surprised at who the killer was.

I guess I have to read the next book, since the election happened and Wolf is no longer sheriff. That horrible MacLean has taken Wolf’s place. I’m guessing that’s temporary. Who knows?

Anyway, there’s no sex in this book and the F-bomb was used 1 time.

As to the narration: Sean Patrick Hopkins has a good reading voice and does the men’s voices just fine but the needs to work on the women’s voices.

Great listen as usual.<br />

David Wolf's appeal, as I believe the author intended is his humanness. He is flawed, his personal life sometimes is in shambles. David's intuitive investigatory mind works in the background just bite many trials and tribulations.

Not My Favorite Wolf Story

Of the first 5 books in the series (currently the only ones available through Audible) this is my least favorite. It is darker and more disturbing. There really isn't much positive or upbeat developments with any of the characters; there is stress, angst and murder in their lives. The murders are disturbing. And while in general I do like twists and surprises in story lines, these twists are depressing. I found the whole experience of listening to this book a downer. However, it was well written and Hopkins does his usual good job of narrating.

Do not buy the audible—’ve never been so bored in my life

The audible actor acts like he’s reading the ingredients off a cough medicine bottle.

Monotone, emotionless, motionless, and uninspiring, I don’t know how I made it even halfway through this.

The writing and story might have been okay, but I have no idea because it was so squashed by the audible. I had to put this on double the speed to pretend manipulate some kind of motion in the acting. It didn’t work.

If the writer got any feedback prior to this, I would highly recommend redoing the audible. It would be worth every penny.

NOT Michael Connolly

Amazon said if I liked Michael Connolly I would love Jeff Carson. Cold Lake never got off the ground after Five chapters and an hour listening. I could not take the punishment any longer and shut it off. In one hour less than five minutes on the finding of a body in the lake and 55 minutes about the sheriffs re-election campaign and its effects in existing employees. I could care less about it. Boring non plot.

Love this series

Good story line,. All the characters are believable and interesting. Happy to find a new favorite author. The author also comes up with descriptive words that are not all tired and worn out. Nice and refreshing.
