In 1973 Jane Tennison, aged 22, leaves the Metropolitan Police Training Academy to be placed on probationary exercise in Hackney, where criminality thrives. We witness her struggle to cope in a male-dominated, chauvinistic environment, learning fast to deal with shocking situations with no help or sympathy from her superiors. Then comes her involvement in her first murder case. No one witnessed the savage beating of a tragic young girl who, the postmortem reveals, was pregnant when she died.

Story
Young Anna Travis has been assigned to her first murder case - a series of killings that has shocked even the most hardened of detectives. They started eight years ago – now the body count is up to six. The method of killing is identical, the backgrounds of the girls identical - all drug-users and prostitutes. Then a seventh body is found. The modus operandi is the same - but the victim is a young student with the 'face of an angel'. The profile of the murderer has changed dramatically.

Good plot but laughable narration
Gripping but dated tale(derogatory terms used for various people), but the narrator should never attempt more than one character’s voice, definitely avoid trying to do a male. This put me off the tale as it was cringeworthy.

Compelling murder mystery PI drama
Absolutely brilliant series of books, this one was so bitter sweet, I was praying for a happy ending for Jake and Lorraine but not to be, so many twists to the book, and although Lorraine had solved it in her mind, Jake completed it in her memory, narration was brilliant and added to the book immensely

1 Star or 5???
I didn’t know what to rate this book. It was intriguing and keeps the reader hooked. 5 stars. But if you a person with a sensitive soul or soft heart, 1 star - DON’T DO IT. Just read the first two books, Cold Shoulder and Cold Blood, and stop right there. I will carry this one with me grieving my mind for a long, long time. This is the book that keeps you awake at night - tears at the ready.

Did not appriciate this book
Lynda La Plate is known for the strong female roles in her stories. In this one she paints a picture of her heroine of a love sick puppy that sacrifices everything for a relationship that isn't even 2 weeks old. Very unlike the battered but mind strong main character of the first book.
