Alcoholism, drug abuse, and similar destructive practices can render families dysfunctional. When the children of these families become adults, they sometimes develop self-defeating survival tactics, such as low self-esteem or an obsession with controlling another person's behavior. To help those stuck in codependent cycles identify and eliminate such troubling issues from their relationships, Beattie shares wisdom gained from years of experience.

The causes of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder range from severe neglect to monstrous abuse. Many survivors grew up in houses that were not homes-in families that were as loveless as orphanages and sometimes as dangerous. If you felt unwanted, unliked, rejected, hated, and/or despised for a lengthy portion of your childhood, trauma may be deeply engrained in your mind, soul, and body. This book is a practical guide to recovering from lingering childhood trauma. It is copiously illustrated with examples of the author's and his clients' journeys of recovering.

Dang Gary Noon!
I like the book but sheesh the narrator must have fallen asleep. Many repeats and tons of skipping whole pages. If there were 11 bullet points he would say the first two and then skip to number 11.... every time no kidding. It became comical. Definitely choose another narrator. I really think I should get my money back. Great book though!!!

INTERESTING BOOK! LISTEN CAREFULLY!
So this book was recommended to me by a relationship coach I’ve been speaking with. Now, Prior to listening to the book I went ahead and read some of the reviews. They suggested that this book was very “in to the Bible” and quoted it a lot. I, however, Did notice that it did quote the Bible a little bit. But it didn’t Refer to it as much as people had Suggested. This book gave me great insight on how I was acting in my previous relationship. I unconsciously was doing several things in the relationship that were mentioned in this book. It gives you the knowledge and tools to pinpoint things that you may be doing in any relationship of your life. Now, it does refer to alcohol dependency quite a bit. But you can actually relate it to many things. Not just alcoholism. The book has a section about detachment that really spoke to me. I had taken a lot of notes and received a lot of good info from that section of the book. Be patient with it as it is a slow read but there is great material. My only down grade to this book is that it kind of suggest that everybody is codependent. And what I mean by that is there is a part where it says that giving gifts to people is relatable to codependency. I personally do not agree with that. As giving is a part of growing in life. It’s also a love language. Which seems to be the opposite of what that talks about. Otherwise it’s a good book if you want some insight on how to deal with relationships and people in general this is a good recommendation.
