The year is 1931. The new and luxurious transatlantic liner Empress of Britain is on her eastward passage. Among the first-class passengers on board are two English confidence tricksters, making a discreet exit from a little awkwardness they have left behind them in the United States. A chance meeting on deck brings them a tempting new target in the shape of Miss Charnwood and her niece, the beautiful Diana, only child of the immensely wealthy Fabian Charnwood.

no, but i will definitely look for more of his work.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

A thrilling page turner , brilliant listen with more twists and turns and intrigue
An excellent narrator too, one of Robert Goddard's best.

A page-turning portrait from the 1930's of humanity's darker side and the ruthless abuse of power by the rich and influential that still continues today

A great yarn

A typically twisty early Robert Goddard tale. As always the story was excellent. I hadn’t come across this narrator before but he suited the tale perfectly. At times reminiscent of John Le Mesurier at others of Michael Williams, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment.

Excellent

It’s not just the narrator’s voice, his breadth of accents and characterisation- although these are excellent.

It’s not the storyline, although it twists and turns with the smoothness and turn of speed of a Daimler Double 6 on the Dorking road.

It’s these, but set in the post war roaring 30s, teetering still on the heels of the depression era, looking back further to 1914 Sarajevo and the subsequent millions of young lives wasted. It’s the evocation of the lives of the idle rich interspersed with the scheming and intrigue of those that prey upon them. And a premise that might - just might - be the real deal…
