It has never been harder to focus than it is now. We live in a noisy, crowded, stressful world that changes so fast, we’re always running to catch up. Traditional education doesn’t give us the skills to manage. And if you live largely in your own head, techniques like mindfulness fall short. In extremes, we turn to external solutions like social media, alcohol, and recreational drugs, just to get some space from our own thoughts.

Thrive or die: That's the rule of evolution. Despite this brutal logic, some species have learned to survive in even the most hostile conditions. Others couldn't - and perished. While incremental genetic adaptations hone the physiology of nearly every creature on this planet, there's another evolutionary force that is just as important: the power of choice. In this explosive investigation into the limits of endurance, journalist Scott Carney discovers how humans can wedge control over automatic physiological responses into the breaking point between stress and biology.

This lecture took place in the largest auditorium of the Moscow State University (named after M. V. Lomonosov). This special event was organized for the staff of the university. It was likely the classified nature of Buteyko’s research during the 1960s (for first Soviet spaceship missions or Soviet Cosmos) and exclusiveness of his discoveries that predetermined the organization of this lecture. Hence, it was definitely a very large and significant event for the scientific staff of the Moscow State University, the most famous and prestigious university of the USSR.

Story
Anxiety is one of the biggest killers in the modern age. If you've ever experienced anxiety, panic attacks, phobias or any of the other ways anxiety manifests itself, you'll know just how debilitating it can be. I struggled for years with it and lived my life in constant fear. I wouldn't go out, I wouldn't meet new people, I wouldn't grow as a person. Anxiety had stopped me living my life. Until one day I said, "Enough is enough!" and I made a decision to overcome this horrible affliction, no matter what.
Summary

Actionable steps with specific goals
Loved the book. Quick, easy listen on my 1.5 hour commute home from work (1.5x speed). Also gave further reading resources throughout and near the end of the book. I now have daily exercises and steps, and specific goals to reach (ultimate goal is to have a control point ("CP") of 40 seconds or more, for 6 months - this means be able to gentle nasal breathe in, gently nasal breathe out, and stop breathing: the point where you start to feel an urge to breathe is your CP). Pretty simple - you gotta retrain your body to do more with less breathing. Great book!!!!

Good book but could use some editing
The author makes the key point that breathing should be proportional to the metabolic need. When people over-breathe (analogous to over eating) it has consequences. (1)The excess oxygen - or more correctly the lack of CO2 - will hamper the release of O2 from hemoglobin (Bohr effect).(2)air-hunger due to excess CO2 will stimulate vasodilation and production of NO - both beneficial.
Chapter 3 in this short book contains the breathing exercises and is the meat of the book. A lot of redundant material could have been cut out.
Lastly, the book keeps mentioning that the videos can be found in ButeykoClinic.com. But I can’t locate them.

New Beginning
I just finished Close Your Mouth for the third time. I am amazed at what I have learned and what I am putting into practice already. I have struggled with inherited emphysema for 26 years. I have never heard anyone, doctor or layperson, mention I should breathe out of my nose. I was a chronic mouth breather. I am just starting on this journey so I will keep you posted on Facebook. Thank you so much for writing this book and now I am on to Oxygen Advantage. I will get off this oxygen tank! People will hear about it now...from me!
