Summary

A thrilling new adventure featuring literature’s favourite detective like you’ve never seen him before. The first in a series, Clockwork Sherlock follows ex-soldier Captain Jo Barnes. The mysterious VR detective singles her out as his own Dr Watson, but he’s about to find out she’s no fawning sidekick.

When tech giant Robert Fairfield is found dead of a suspected drug overdose, fingers are pointed at the two women who stood most to gain from his death: his fiancée and leader of the New Ludds, Greta Blackstone, and Beth Fairchild, Robert’s ambitious daughter. But when Beth is found dead and the evidence shows she was killed before her father, the suspect is obvious. To everyone, that is, except Sherlock Holmes.

Using futuristic tech and good, old-fashioned sleuthing, Captain Barnes and the famed detective set out to find the killer. With rooftop pursuits, gangland bosses and plenty of action - this listen is sure to appeal to fans of Ben Aaronovitch, Paul Cornell and Jim Butcher.

Full marks...

It has been quite some time since a book has ticked all my somewhat nerdy boxes. I am an avid Sherlock Holmes fan, but also enjoy a bit of sci-fy too. This book has been the absolute best recommended by Audible book for a long time - spot on!

Illiterate narrator ruins perfectly good book

You’re an actor. You get offered a job narrating an audiobook. You have a quick glance through it the night before (no need to actually READ the thing, right?) Well, there are some words in there you’ve never seen before and don’t know how to pronounce but, hey, let’s just wing it! No one’s going to notice, right? And these longish sentences with the commas in? Nah, it’ll be fine. Just plough on through, putting the stresses and the pauses in any old place.

Conan Doyle / sci fantasy

This came as a suggestion while working through The complete Sherlock Holmes narrated by Stephen Fry (brilliant) and is a very good listen.
A good story and pays homage to Doyle's characters and writing plus including a compelling sub story.
I will be looking out for others in the series and by the author.

Quite enjoyed it

As a fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories , film/tv adaptations and also sci-fi I didn't know what to expect but it was surprisingly enjoyable. i didn't read the description because i like to be surprised.
Would recommend for someone who likes a thriller, a murderer mistery with a bit of science fiction. the sci-fi part was not overly complicated that you don't know what's going on, it was cleverly built and explained when needed which resulted in an immersive world building experience. I liked the story and the elements of humour. I chose this book blindly knowing nothing about it, the protagonist is not Sherlock Holmes which put me off at first but i gave it a chance and I'm glad i did. It's a fun listen. I has two twists which i appreciated and a satisfying conclusion.
Narrator was good, accents were also ok but i can't really judge, I'm not a native English speaker. 4/5 because it's not the most amazing thing I've ever read/listened to but still pretty good.

Terrible narration

I generally try and stick with something until at least halfway but gave up after 3 chapters. The monotone narration is just awful.

definitely not another Ben Aaronovitch

struggled with the whingy quality of the storyline, particularly in the first few chapters. I did finish the book but it was more out of sheer bloody mindedness than because I was gripped by the plot.

Very enjoyable

Really enjoyed Clockwork Sherlock once I got my head around the VR concept! Well worth a read if you’re into ‘who done it’ stories!

The Game is Afoot

A very original story that is both gripping and fun. Most people will have worked out who Clockwork Sherlock is in very short time. But the rest of the story is very interesting, with red herrings and twisted clues. Well worth the credit and my valuable time. Recommended 5*

Very enjoyable

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, although I found it a bit difficult to start with. For want of a better word, it’s a bit uneven, but stick with it. It’s an interesting take on a near future Britain, mainly London, with enough nods to the original Sherlock Holmes to justify the title and to keep me happy. It’s a satisfying mystery, all the clues are there, and I did guess the identities of the killer, the threat, and Clockwork Sherlock himself, which made me feel very smug. I am hoping that there will be a sequel!
