The most significant of which is a 6'7" tall mummy.
Allan Quatermain, hero of King Solomon's mines, tells a moving tale of his first wife, the Dutch-born Marie Marais, and the adventures that were linked to her beautiful, tragic history. This moving story depicts the tumultuous political era of the 1830s, involving the Boers, French colonists and the Zulu tribe in the Cape colony of South Africa. Hate and suspicion run high between the home government and the Dutch subjects.
A natural storyteller and raconteur in his own right - just listen to Paddle Your Own Canoe and Gumption - actor, comedian, carpenter, and all-around manly man Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) brings his distinctive baritone and a fine-tuned comic versatility to Twain's writing. In a knockout performance, he doesn't so much as read Twain's words as he does rejoice in them, delighting in the hijinks of Tom - whom he lovingly refers to as a "great scam artist" and "true American hero".
She and Allan is a novel by H. Rider Haggard, first published in 1921. It brought together his two most popular characters, Ayesha from She (to which it serves as a prequel), and Allan Quatermain from King Solomon's Mines. John L Chatty gives a composed, engaging performance of American author Jack London’s beloved novel White Fang. Both man and beast must fight for survival in the harsh Yukon landscape during the Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890s. The hero of the story, White Fang - part wolf, part dog - is born in the wilderness, but soon finds himself enmeshed with humans. Will he survive neglect and abuse? Will he triumph over adversity and experience the love and loyalty of a benevolent owner?
The novel is excellent, but the recording is dire. There are alternative versions on this site and I would recommend any of those over this one.
The narrator speaks in a monotone drawl conveying no emotion or interest. By far the worst reading I have heard in any book downloaded from Audible. Even worse than most free audiobooks narrated by amateurs in their kitchens that are available on some websites.
As well as the dreary voice, the narrator frequently mixes the words 'dog' and 'god' - both of which feature prominently in this book, often leading to confusion when both appear close to eachother.
To be avoided (although as the story is excellent, a different recording of the same is to be recommended).
