Pubblicato nel 1894, il "Trionfo della morte" conclude la cosiddetta trilogia dei Romanzi della Rosa dopo "Il piacere" e "L'innocente". Giorgio Aurispa, il protagonista del romanzo, è un Superuomo annoiato dall'esistenza insulsa e mediocre dei suoi simili, ed è quindi impegnato in una continua ricerca di un nuovo senso della vita e di una perfezione spirituale fondata sull'autodominio. Il rapporto con la sua amante, Ippolita Sanzio, per la quale egli prova una attrazione erotica irresistibile, è vissuto come un limite ed un ostacolo alla sua ricerca, rendendolo schiavo del desiderio, fino a fargli identificare in lei "la Nemica" capace di assorbire le sue forze vitali.
