Summary

Friends gather for a night of ghost-story telling in this fantastic novel by Henry James. One friend begins to tell a seemingly innocent story about a governess and her charges. This story is anything but innocent though, as the truth about the dark and twisted past of the family comes to light.

The governess begins seeing a man around the house, and a woman down by the lake. The maid of the house tells the governess that the descriptions sound like the former governess and the valet. Strange things begin to happen, leading the governess to believe that the family is haunted. She is convinced that the ghosts are pandering to the children; yet the children deny being able to see or hear anything unusual.

As more and more strange occurrences happen involving the children and the governess, she starts to question what might really be going on behind the scenes in this twisted and fantastic story that leaves the listener questioning what reality is or isn't. Is it possible that this is all in her head or is there a far more sinister secret lurking in the shadows at the manor?
