Summary

"The Signal Man" is a magnificent, tightly focused ghost story. Dickens' charm pervades this mysterious and ominous tale. Various grim events occur but feel somewhat calm - not bloody or appalling, but enthralling and other worldly. Dickens invests the signal-man with education beyond his station. This adds to the credibility of the story as well as impressing the narrator. A must-listen for Dickens fans. An American voice at the request of our listeners.

The wrong narrator for the story

The story is a good one but is irredeemably spoiled by the choice of an American narrator. His pronunciation and speech patterns are not British English and he read the story without any feeling for it. The many unnecessary pauses between words jarred badly.

Good story. Poor narration.

This is one of the better ones that Deaver Brown has narrated. At least I could put up with it to the end. Still sounds as if being read from a telephone box - very echoey. Good short story. Just narration is a bit irritating.

Terrible narrator

This marvellous story is read with such apathy and disregard. I bought it again with a different reader who read with expression and requisite drama. A waste of a credit.
