Summary

On the eve of his marriage to the beautiful Mercedes, having that very day been made captain of his ship, the young sailor Edmond Dantès is arrested on a charge of treason, trumped up by jealous rivals. Incarcerated for many lonely years in the isolated and terrifying Chateau d'If near Marseille, he meticulously plans his brilliant escape and extraordinary revenge.

Of all the "masked avengers" and "caped crusaders" in literature, The Count of Monte Cristo is at once the most daring and the most vulnerable. Alexandre Dumas (père), master storyteller, takes us on a journey of adventure, romance, intrigue, and ultimately, redemption.

Great Thriller

I took the risk of listening to this story, as I have never read it, and loved it. This is firstly a great thriller and secondly a love story. How greed, honour, revenge, and love can drive you to your doom or destiny, how a man can walk to the edge of the abyss, and step back and walk away; and cheat death! This is a long book, and there are some low or dull moments, but overall a very satisfying story. Bill Homewood is excellent as the narrator. I certainly will listen to it again.

Incredible!

Fantastic narrator, heartbreaking and wonderfully variated story! A must-listen! I cried, laughed and marveled in the beautiful language and intense story. One of the best audiobooks I've ever listened to.

It’s one of the best stories there is

The story is awesome, yes it slows a bit in the middle, but it’s an undeniable classic.
Great reading. The narrator clearly lives in a delightful house and eats well - you can hear the birds and his stomach going for it.

Fantastic.

So much better than I thought it would be. Well worth listening to the full length story.

52 hours flew by!

Excellent story and superb performance. The narrator made it easy to keep up with the dozens of characters and maintained an exciting pace.

Count of Monte Cristo

Read with perfect pace and emphasis for a classic tale . The individual voices are well differentiated making it feel at times like a drama . Engrossing .

The Count of Monte Cristo.

Truly outstanding! Read throughout by an artist of the highest order.
I read this book many years ago, and I realise more than ever, after a second reading, the skill and talent of the author. A wonderful read!

Fantastic

It’s a long time since I read this book. It was very good then but Bill Homewood brought it alive so much so I resented turning it off. Absolutely excellent.

Thoroughly enjoyed this classic tale

Would you listen to The Count of Monte Cristo again? Why?

Yes I would. But I might break it up into random bits as it's really long.

What other book might you compare The Count of Monte Cristo to, and why?

I can't compare it to anything else I've read to date as it is so long and detailed.

Which character – as performed by Bill Homewood – was your favourite?

I enjoyed the Count of Monte Cristo for the most part. There were times when I felt disappointed in the way things were going. I loved Valentine too.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Love overcomes evil, lead by example.

Any additional comments?

There was so much depth to this book. And for the first time I wanted to buy the book to keep reading when listening wasn't possible. It seemed to take a long time to finish it but that was because other shorter books came up in the meantime. But this is a book I could listen to with the family as the content was suitable.
