Summary

The masterpiece of Rome's greatest poet, Virgil's Aeneid has inspired generations of readers and holds a central place in Western literature. The epic tells the story of a group of refugees from the ruined city of Troy, whose attempts to reach a promised land in the West are continually frustrated by the hostile goddess Juno. Finally reaching Italy, their leader, Aeneas, is forced to fight a bitter war against the natives to establish the foundations from which Rome is destined to rise. This magnificent poem, in the modern translation by Cecil Day Lewis, is superbly read by David Collins.

A Stunning Story

This is a story to stir the blood even if you knew nothing about the Greeks and Trojans. It is a beautiful translation, easy on the ear, and read with great sensitivity.

excellent strong rendering of Virgin's masterpiece, full of nuance and masculinity - the reader's voice articulated meaning supremely.

mt favourite bit in the story, was when that guy kills a bull with a punch.

Interesting!

The story itself I enjoyed, it was very fascinating to see how the old times are being described from different perspectives. This poem was written by a Roman writer (Virgil) while Troy and Odysseus was written by Homer (Greek writer). Even though there is no mention about Homer himself, this poem is what happened after the Fall of Try which was written hundreds of years after.

The structure however was bad, at least in my opinion. The whole audio book is mostly divided into parts of 6-9 minutes each and it's very difficult to find where you can stop since the parts cut out in the middle of events and actions.

Overall, to people who enjoy ancient literature, I would definitely recommend this beautifully written piece of work. Even though it didn't have as much action as, for instance, illiad or Odysseus, it was still very enjoyable.

Powerful narration…

…but not overdone. I have listened to this twice now, and regard it as a fine performance. Intense, sympathetic to the characters, clear. Excellent!

Magnificent in every respect. The translation rolls with an inexorable cadence and captures the epic tone beautifully, while the reading is flawless throughout. I was really gripped.

Very pleasing listen.
you can see where it draws its inspiration if you have read Odyssey.
