Il secondo romanzo di Svevo, molto apprezzato da Joyce, è un' opera introspettiva in cui viene messa in luce la vita interiore del protagonista, Emilio Brentani, alter ego dello stesso autore. Emilio ha solo 35 anni ma è afflitto da quella forma di malinconia congenita che Italo Svevo chiama "senilità": il grigiore di una vita mancata, l'instabilità dell'umore e dei propositi, l'inettitudine nel realizzare i propri progetti. Vive modestamente con la timida sorella Amalia (non più giovane, né bella) a Trieste, ed è succube dell'amicizia dello scultore Stefano Balli. Lavora come impiegato ma gode di una certa "reputazioncella" letteraria e intellettuale derivatagli dal successo riscosso da un suo romanzo. Inesperto in amore, si innamora della bella ma "facile" Angiolina, che gode in città di una pessima fama, e che lo tradisce continuamente. Trascurata dal fratello, Amalia si innamora segretamente (non ricambiata) dell'affascinante scultore Balli, ma quando il suo sentimento viene scoperto, sentendosi frustrata e derisa inizia a stordirsi con l'etere fino ad ammalarsi di polmonite e a morirne. Emilio, completamente vinto dalla gelosia, dal senso di colpa e dalle menzogne con cui ha ingannato la propria coscienza e la propria intelligenza, rinuncia definitivamente a sentirsi vivo, chiudendosi in un esistenza nevrotica fatta di ricordi e bugie.
