Summary
Elvira und ihr Gatte, der Rittmeister, leben auf ihrem Schloss, als der Vagant Pelegrin auftaucht. Die drei hatten sich vor 17 Jahren in Santa Cruz kennengelernt. Der Rittmeister wollte mit dem damaligen Matrosen Pelegrin nach Hawaii segeln. Die Tochter Viola entstammt der damaligen Liebe zwischen Pelegrin und Elvira. Pelegrin wird nun für den Rittmeister und seine Frau zu einer Erinnerung an ungelebtes Leben.
Der Rittmeister bricht nach Hawaii auf, um noch einmal zu leben. Auch Elvira muss, trotz ihrer Zuneigung zu ihrem Mann, erkennen, dass sie ihre Sehnsucht nach Pelegrin unterdrückt hat. Ihre Erkenntnis: "Wir dürfen uns lieben, wir alle!" Der Rittmeister bricht seine übereilt angetretene Reise wegen seiner Tochter wieder ab und kehrt aufs Schloss zurück. Der sterbende Pelegrin: "Man kann nicht beides haben, scheint es. Der eine hat das Meer, der andere das Schloss; der eine hat Hawaii, der andere das Kind." Und Viola: "Ich bin aus deinem Blute das Kind, Viola, die alles von neuem erfährt, die alles noch einmal beginnt..."
