Summary

Joseph Trotta, ein aus ärmlichen Verhältnissen stammender Unteroffizier, rettet in der Schlacht von Solferino Kaiser Franz Joseph I. das Leben. Der "Held von Solferino" wird in den Adelsstand erhoben, mit einem Orden ausgezeichnet und zum Hauptmann befördert. Seinem Sohn Franz verbietet er den Eintritt in die Armee. Er wird zum Bezirkshauptmann einer mährischen Kleinstadt. Aufgrund der Eintönigkeit seines Berufsstandes schreibt er seinem Sohn Carl Joseph vor, eine Militärlaufbahn einzuschlagen. Der zartbesaitete junge Mann widersetzt sich nicht. Er wird jedoch nicht glücklich als Leutnant und versucht sich mit Glücksspiel, Frauen und Alkohol abzulenken. Schließlich fällt er im 1. Weltkrieg. Sein Vater stirbt ebenfalls kurze Zeit später.

Very moving

My native language is english. Listening to the evocative german prose of this book read by Gert Westphal a perfect conjured up the feeling of sadness to the end of the Austrian empire quite wonderfully. At the same time there is satire of the cleverest sort. I will listen to the whole again some day.
