Publisher's Summary

"His perfect indifference, and your pointed dislike, make it so delightfully absurd!"

Pride and Prejudice has delighted generations of readers with its unforgettable cast of characters, carefully choreographed plot, and a hugely entertaining view of the world and its absurdities. With the arrival of eligible young men in their neighbourhood, the lives of Mr and Mrs Bennet and their five daughters are turned inside out and upside down. Pride encounters prejudice, upward-mobility confronts social disdain, and quick-wittedness challenges sagacity, as misconceptions and hasty judgements lead to heartache and scandal, but eventually to true understanding, self-knowledge, and love. In this supremely satisfying story, Jane Austen balances comedy with seriousness, and witty observation with profound insight. If Elizabeth Bennet returns again and again to her letter from Mr Darcy, readers of the novel are drawn even more irresistibly by its captivating wisdom.

    "First of many"

This was my first Audible download, and I was interested to see how a familiar story would appeal in this format. Having seen the film versions, I was unsure whether I would find the unabridged audiobook too long. I needn't have worried. Lindsay Duncan reads very well, and I enjoyed the full story immensely. I looked forward to the next instalment each evening, and will now be ordering more Jane Austen for my next download.

    "Utterly lovely"

No matter how many times I read or listen to this book it is still wonderful. This is a great reading of it - why would you buy an abridged version when you can have it all?

A lovely reading which captures the spirit of the book without the reader getting in the way of the characters.

    "Jane Austen Revisited"

'Pride and Prejudice' has long been one of my favourite Austen novels and this reading of it made it even more so. Lyndsay Duncan catches every nuance of Austen's style which made listening to it a joy. I highly recommend this to Austen fans and those who are yet to discover the joys of her writing.

    "No review necessary!"

Lindsay Duncan reads this very well, in a non-intrusive and clear manner.

As for the novel, what needs to be said? This is Jane Austen's best known and arguably most beloved novel and sets the standard for this genre of historic romantic fiction. If this genre is your preference, and you have not read P&P before, enjoy! You are in for a treat.

    "Delightful"

Unexpectedly excellent story, beautifully read. The narrator manages to give each character a very subtly changed tone without 'putting on a voice'.
I had no previous experience of Jane Austin and will certaily read more of her work.

Where does Pride and Prejudice rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    One of the best.

What did you like best about this story?

It's a wonderful story and the narration was a joy.

Which character – as performed by Lindsay Duncan – was your favourite?

I thought she differentiated well between all the sisters but her interpretation/reading of Elizabeth was particularly good.

"The best Pride & Prejudice narrator on Audible"
What about Lindsay Duncan’s performance did you like?

She delivered Austen's jokes well, much better than the Rosamund Pike edition that's on here.

    "Terribly assembled"

The book has 61 chapters but this audiobook is divided into 10. That's so stupid, some of these 10 sections don't even begin at the start of a chapter, they just start randomly in the middle of a chapter. If the book has 61 chapters, so should the audiobook!

    "fantastic rendition of a classic!"

One thing that can get annoying with the reading of a classic novel is the narrator can feel pressure to add a sense of gravitas to each character- resulting in a rather stilted and pompous version. This version does not have that problem at all. Each character is spoken in a natural, yet accurate to type voice. This story is so fabulous, no special effects required.
