Why not use an English voice artist?

...and if you insist on a North American voice, they should be able to pronounce words like "obliged" properly! I can assure you that it is not "uh-blarged".

The first warning sign was that "shewn" was pronounced "shoon", when any Janeite could tell you that's an old-fashioned spelling of "shown". It also took me a while to realise that the voice artist was attempting to do general English and Somerset accents at some points. If you can't do impressions, it's safest to stick to your own accent.

I'm available to read any American classics you might have in my really poor attempt at an LA accent, if you want me to return the favour.

Persuasion is a good story but I had to uninstall

The narrator was unable to grasp the emphasis in long sentences to the degree that they failed to make sense. I'm getting a better version.

My favourite Jane Austen-but very poorly read

Would you try another book written by Jane Austen or narrated by Mary Sarah?

I would never choose a book read by Mary Sarah. There are so many wonderful readers I can't understand how anyone could allow her to read a classic, did no one listen to it before it was sold?

Who was your favorite character and why?

Anne, of course, is the heroine and you feel her pains and pleasures but all Jane Austen's characters are skillfully drawn.

What didn’t you like about Mary Sarah’s performance?

She is a poor reader and pronounced names incorrectly.

Was Persuasion worth the listening time?

Not with this reader.

The reading of the story is very bad

I love this story but found it very hard to listen to due to the way it was read. Very clipped, really disappointing

Great story not sure about narration.

I was not convinced by the narrator and wish I had chosen an English as opposed to North American version. My fault. How does one pronounce obliged? Oblarged?

Let down. Horrific. Awful.

Brilliant British novel - read by an American lady who clearly had been given no education in how to read a book from the English past
- nor any reading at all. The emotions, inclinations and timing are all over the place. She obviously has no idea what this book is about.
Awful. A complete butchering of a classic.

Great value for money

Thoroughly enjoyed Persuasion! Great value for money at .52p, although the narrator's pronunciation of "obliged" was grating!

Disappointed

One of my favourite Jane Austen stories but I just can't get on with this narration. The emphasis and intonation isn't quite right somehow - the voice sounds almost computerised so I stopped listening quickly before the whole book is spoiled for me.

Lesser-read Jane Austen novel well worth a listen

It took me a while to get used to the narrator's Irish accent - perhaps incongruous to the telling of a quintessentially English novel - but she really brought the story to life.

The style of 19th century literature can make even the most wonderful stories difficult to read in their original version, requiring persistence and determination. I strongly recommend audiobooks for making the literary classics of old accessible to impatient readers.

I had had the book by my bedside for several months but found it hard to penetrate before purchasing the audio book.

Excellent

What made the experience of listening to Persuasion the most enjoyable?

This is probably my favourite Jane Austen book. Hearing it spoken aloud made me appreciate it even more, and though I couldn't really say that Mary Sarah's reading particularly enhanced the experience, neither did it detract. For the price, I would say this version is stunningly good value.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Persuasion?

The whole book is memorable!

Loved the book,hated the narrator.

I've listened to this book within 2 months from a different narrator and can tell you that this narrator does this book no justice.

Poor narration

I love Austen's books. However, I could not finish this version of Persuasion. Mary Sarah is an unfortunate choice of narrator. I'm not certain whether this is her natural accent, it seems odd. I found it jarring, in places her intonation was incorrect and I could not concentrate on the story.

Really BAD narration

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The book may very well be good, and I expect that it will be since it is Jane Austen, but the narration was so bad I couldn't finish it. I have downloaded another version to listen to.

What didn’t you like about Mary Sarah’s performance?

Everything. There wasn't anything I did like about her reading. The accent, the tone, the line delivery, where she did and did not place emphasis. I gave up.

Any additional comments?

I got this version because it was extremely marked down. I can deal with some flaws, a little skip or a repeat and even mediocre narration. But this version wasn't even worth the marked down price.

Enjoyed.

I'm not fond of this narrator. She doesn't imply the meaning of sentences with her inflection and pitch correctly. Making the story more boring than it should be. Having to listen to sister Mary's whining almost made it me quit reading the book. The story is well enough but the ending is too abrupt and I would have liked more Anne and Mr Wentworth and less of everything else.

Austin, lovely. Narration not so much.

I love this story. The narrator seems to be attempting an English accent. Distracting pronunciation.

You get what you pay for

What would have made Persuasion better?

Is this an English accent??? Not sure.. Strange.

What did you like best about this story?

Story of course is timeless

Any additional comments?

The narration is stilted. She doesn't capture the sense of the sentences.... the breaks are wrong. The sense is wrong.....

Not my favorite

I love almost everything Jane Austen but I have tried and failed many times to like this book. The characters just never come to life for me as they do in other books. I found the reading a little annoying. Too often the reader voices the characters words in ways that sound silly and frivolous. I think JA did not suffer fools gladly and enjoyed mocking the whims and weaknesses of people, but I don’t think that every line in this book spoken by anyone other than the 2 main characters was necessarily meant to sound sound shallow. Even people of only average intelligence can have serious thoughts. And (I know this is unreasonable pickiness on my part) but I went absolutely crazy every time the reader said the word “obliged” - which she pronounced “ah-blahjd”.

Pick a version with a better narrator

Persuasion is a great book. It is a wonderful story with great characters.

The narrator pretty much managed to destroy that. Her reading was so clipped and sing-song that it was painful listening. I did listen to the sample and it didn't seem so very bad, but when you actually tuck in to listen, it is dreadful.

I do highly recommend the book...just pick one with a good narrator.

Awkward reading, fantastic story

Her reading is awkward and the pronunciation of several repeated words hilariously ridiculous. I laughed happily and heartily every time she read the word “obliged” along with a few others, however, and it was definitely worth the 50 cents.
