Summary

Les Misérables is set in Paris after the French Revolution. In the sewers and backstreets, we encounter "the wolf-like tread of crime", and assassination for a few sous is all in a day's work. We weep with the unlucky and heart-broken Fantine, and we exult with the heroic revolutionaries of the barricades; but above all we thrill to the steadfast courage and nobility of soul of ex-convict Jean Valjean, always in danger from the relentless pursuit of the diabolical Inspector Javert.

A lovely story well read

A lovely reading. The singing is grating but mostly his voice has a nice cadence. The story is a bit preachy in places and the lists can be a touch wearing but overall it's wonderful. (Just skip through the sewage chapters if you don't like them!)

Wonderful though sound quality poor

There are some very slow chapters of pontification in Hugo's unabridged novel and this is the first time I have wondered whether abridged might have been shoos idea. However, I might have missed hearing some fascinating background about Paris, the Republic, and the labyrinthine Parisian sewers. A powerful story, the more so because the recording is so long. Great and skilful reading.

The files appear to lose quality by being over compressed - no problem through headphones but not great through a car stereo.

An incredible & immense story

This is one of the best books I’ve ever got through. I would recommend to anyone. It may seem arduous at times but it’s worth it.

Life-changing

The short version of this book is an old Afrikaans poem (gedig) by Jan FE Celiers:

"Dis al"

Dis die blond,
dis die blou:
dis die veld,
dis die lug;
en 'n voël draai bowe in eensame vlug -
dis al

Dis 'n balling gekom
oor die oseaan,
dis 'n graf in die gras,
dis 'n vallende traan -
dis al

Epic!

Great story but then we all know that. The narration lets it down a bit but you soon get used to it.

Incredible

Sociology, history, breathtaking storytelling. If you don't weep at the end, are you even human?

Life changing.

Hard work but I can't help thinking Hugo might have made it so on purpose. You have to really commit to get through it but I if I never read anything better I won't be disappointed.

Excellent narration

This book is both an example or social commentary - after all, Victor Hugo's tome is literally about the wretched ones - and historical narrative, told from the perspective of a man who experienced and witnessed much of what he describes. Alongside the tale of crime, punishment, redemption, renewal and (eventual) freedom is a story of human lives that are entwined with ties not easily broken. Struggle marks the lives of each character as they battle along the path that is set before them, and yet the indomitable spirit rises time and time again without measure until it lies at rest in fulfilment. A beautiful, notable saga, if a touch too long-winded and dense on detail. The narration was excellent.

What a Book!

if like me you come to this book for the first time having been a fan of the musical then put on your seatbelt and prepare for a long but fascinating journey. In this book the characters come to life. Victor Hugo describes the times in such brilliant clarity. at points you may get a little bored but that depends on you.

in short, a most enjoyable 60 hours.
