Summary

Balzac décrit, avec une cruauté réaliste rarement atteinte, la descente aux enfers du malheureux Sylvain Pons, prototype du parent pauvre, compositeur démodé, pique-assiette attendrissant, génial collectionneur de bric-à-brac, et ami du bon Allemand Schmucke. Autour de ces cœurs purs, il construit une impitoyable galerie de portraits : la portière Cibot, l'Auvergnat Rémonencq, l'avocat marron Fraisier, le "tableaumane" juif Elie Magus. Les parents riches et méprisants Popinot ou Camusot se liguent pour assassiner le pauvre homme par des mots acérés qui sont autant de coups de poignard dans un cœur sensible.
Quelques phrases d'un total cynisme surgissent au détour de ces pages inspirées : "En médecine, le cabriolet est plus important que le savoir." À la longue, il en est d'une profession comme du mariage, on n'en voit plus que les inconvénients."
